Manila, Philippines  (The Adobo Chronicles ) – In the Philippines, the Vice President is but a titular figure, especially if his name is Jejomar Binay.

As if Binay doesn’t already have enough headache facing multiple charges and investigations on unexplained wealth and alleged corruption while he was mayor of the City of Makati, he has just been totally snubbed by President NoyNoy Aquino.

Aquino, who is currently out of the country attending a summit meeting of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Myanmar, appointed his sister, actress and TV host Kris, as acting president.

In her first official act as acting president, Kris welcomed the charismatic President of Mexico Enrique Peña Nieto to the Philippines at the Villamor Airbase on Thursday night. Nieto was on his way to Australia but had to make a two-hour layover in Manila for his plane’s refueling.

Kris posted on her Instagram account a photo of her short encounter with Nieto, whose movie star-like appeal made him a favorite politician in his home country. Along with Kris was her friend and TV co-host Boy Abunda.

Kris said they had an “informative conversation” with Nieto.

Kris wore a strapless, low-cut black cocktail dress, hoping to impress the 48-year-old good-looking Nieto. She was visibly disappointed when Nieto emerged from his plane with his wife, First Lady Angelica Rivera.

The openly-gay Boy Abunda’s reaction upon seeing Nieto was the exact opposite to that of Aquino. Think about eye candy!

AND YOUR NEW MISS UNIVERSE IS …

imageLas Vegas, Nevada (The Adobo Chronicles) –  Jenna Talackova, the 23-year-old woman who forced Donald Trump and his Miss Universe Canada pageant to end its ban on transgender contestants, fell short of the national title last year. But reports from Miss Universe Pageant franchise holders from all over the world are reporting that they have seen an influx of transgender contestant applications this year. Trump is reportedly considering lifting the transgender ban worldwide.

In the Philippines, Brazil, Venezuela and Mexico, aspiring beauty queens are  getting nervous about stiffer competition they are likely to face from transgender contestants. These countries have each had a fair share of international beauty pageant titles, including Miss Universe.

Even Russia, host of last year’s pageant, seemed  open to lifting the transgender ban despite the Putin government’s strict laws against homosexuality.

Transgender people are slowly but surely making their mark in the arts, sports, business and politics, not to mention being poised to be the face of what many people are calling the “next major civil rights movement,” as proven by this week’s  Time magazine cover.

Will the next Miss Universe be  transgender? First, write to Donald Trump and express your support for this long overdue change in the pageant’s discriminatory  policy.

BORDER PATROL, CUSTOMS AGENTS SENT TO ARIZONA-MEXICO BORDER

imageNogales City, Arizona – The Department of Homeland Security and Bureau of Customs sent their enforcement agents to Nogales, Arizona, near the U.S.-Mexico border, to closely monitor recent increased activity which authorities suspect might be a violation of U.S. immigration and customs laws.

The agents were dispatched to a mile-long stretch of the border fence in response to an urgent request from Arizona Governor Janice Brewer. Brewer’s office had received complaints from Nogales residents that illegal activity is happening everyday at the border in plain view of both Americans and Mexicans.

Initial investigation by the agents confirmed that Americans and Mexicans on either side of the border have been playing volleball using the fence as their net. The activity has gained popularity in recent weeks and agents fear that it might spread to the rest of the entire Arizona–Mexico border.

Agents dispatched to the scene are now on a 24-hour watch over the border to ensure that at the end of each game, the Mexican ball does not end up on U.S. soil, which would violate customs regulations. On the other hand, immigration agents want to make sure that only balls –not humans — are being tossed back and forth over the border “net.”
