DAVAO CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, if elected president, will build at 55-ft. wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Philippine presidential candidate Rodrigo Dutere, if elected, is aiming much higher.
Recent statements by the Davao City mayor challenged both the U.S. and Australia to sever their tieswith the Philippines if he gets elected president. He was reacting to the Australian and American ambassadors’ criticism of his video clip in which he joked about the serial rape and murder of a female Australian missionary, saying “the mayor should have been first in line.”
Today, Duterte promised that if elected president, he will build a 71-ft. wall around the Philippine islands to keep foreign governments from interfering with the country’s and his administration’s domestic policies.
Why 71? That’s how old he is.
Welcome to P.I. (Philippine Islands). Make that Philippine Isolationist islands.
MEXICO CITY, Mexico (The Adobo Chronicles) – Legislators in Mexico City passed a proposal asking the federal government to ban Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump from entering the country, citing his repeated anti-Mexican and anti-immigrant comments.
The proposal was approved unanimously, according to Deputy José Manuel Delgadillo of the conservative National Action Party.
Taking its cue from Mexico, members of the Philippine Congress unanimously passed a resolution similarly condemning Trump and banning him from visiting the country.
Although, Trump has not singled out Filipinos in his anti-immigrant comments, Filipino legislators felt that his statements might as well pertain to their countrymen who are among the largest immigrant populations in the United States. They also cited the fact that Mexico and the Philippines have a long history of friendship dating back to the Acapulco Trade. “We’re doing this in solidarity with the Mexican people,” one congressman said. (In fact, there is a town in the Philippine province of Pampanga named Mexico, in honor of the friendship between the two countries.)
When he launched his presidential bid last year, Trump called Mexicans ‘rapists’ and ‘bad people.’ One of his campaign promises is to build a great wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. He has repeatedly said that he will ask Mexico to pay for the cost of building the wall.
The Filipino legislators fear that if elected president, Trump will totally ban all immigrants to the United States and deport Filipinos currently residing therein.
MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Tradition dictates that the spouse of the head of the host-state tour the spouses of guest-leaders during Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) events, but with President Aquino being a bachelor, his sisters had to fill in.
Ambassador Marciano Paynor Jr., director general of the APEC National Organizing Council, earlier told reporters that the president’s sisters Ballsy Aquino-Cruz, Pinky Aquino-Abelleda, Viel Aquino-Dee and Kris Aquino will be giving the spouses of APEC leaders a historical tour of Intramuros during the Nov. 18-19 event.
Jardin said the tour, with the theme “A Walk Through Time,” would recreate a “living museum” scenario at every stop featuring actors, dancers and musicians.
However, at the last minute, Kris, an actress and talk show host, asked that she be excused from the spouses’ tour.
She asked her president brother to assign her instead to be the personal chaperone of two of the most good-looking heads of state attending the Manila summit: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto.
Kris told The Adobo Chronicles that she is ‘very kilig’ (flirtatiously excited) just thinking about it. “Both gentlemen are so pogi (handsome), and it will be an honor and an extreme pleasure for me to be their tourist guide! I also want to do a one-on-one interview with them for my TV show.”
