Senator Pia Cayetano: Air Korean Telenovelas In Korean!

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Senator Pia Cayetano on Monday said the government broadcast stations should consider airing children’s programs in English to help them develop proficiency in the language at their young age, saying that the new normal due to COVID-19 will demand this skill from many Filipinos.

“Can we start showing a lot of cartoons and family-friendly materials on our government stations. Bakit ba kailangan i-dub? A language is learned earliest at their youngest. The earlier you are exposed to a language, the earlier you can pick it up,” Cayetano said during a Senate hearing focused on futures thinking.

But Cayetano also took a swipe at TV broadcadt stations that show Korean telenovelas, dubbed in Tagalog. “Keep them in Korean and let Filipinos learn a third language,” she said.

Korean dramas started  broadcasting in the the Philippines since 2003, beginning with GMA Netowork’s “Bright Girl.” All Korean dramas go through the process of localization: re-dubbing, pre-editing, post-editing and finalization before going on-air.

Cayetano wants to change that.

So gird your loins, K-fans and enthusiasts. Your kids will learn English from cartoons while you learn Korean from your favorite telenovelas!

This Year’s Miss Universe Pageant Will Be Via Zoom

NEW YORK, New York (The Adobo Chronicles, New York Bureau) – Zozibini Tunzi of South Africa will crown her successor later this year when the 69th edition of the Miss Universe Beauty Pageant is held.

But where?

With the continuing uncertainties of the Covid-19 global pandemic in which face masks and physical distancing have become the norm, the Miss Universe Organization has announced that this year’s pageant will be virtual, by zoom.

The contestants will parade in their national costume, swimsuit and evening gown from the comfort of their respective countries, in an isolated location chosen by their respective franchised pageant organizations. So will the judges who will see the beauties in extreme close-up and asking them the final questions over the Internet.

The Miss Universe crown will be shipped to the winner by overnight FedEx.

There’s no stopping beauty pageant enthusiasts from witnessing the spectacle of Miss Universe.  All they need is a computer or mobile device to view the festivities via zoom.  No expensive show tickets needed!

Anti-Liquor Ban Movement Grows In The Philippines

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – For more than 75 days now, many Filipinos have religiously followed government-imposed protocols to help their country deal with the Covid-19 pandemic. Including observing the liquor ban.

But there comes a point when people have had enough. They want their alcohol. Not the 75% or 99% used as disinfectant against the coronavirus.

However, peace-loving Filipinos are not resorting to riots like those that are spreading like wildfire across America. Rather, they are mounting their anti-liquor ban surely but calmly.

Pastor Elon Mask (not his real name), threatened to drink all the Mompo (mass wine) in the sacristy of his parish church, while appetizing on hostia (sacramental host.)

Chef Yeow Can Cook posted on his Facebook page the three top reasons why he thinks the liquor ban should be lifted immediately.

Kristian Bornagain, meanwhile, told The Adobo Chronicles he has been praying fervently to St. Edward, patron of pandemic victims, to protect him and his loved ones from the corona virus, while asking San Miguel (St. Micahel) to intercede with officials to lift the liquor ban.

Will these appeals fall on deaf ears?
