Baguio City, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – It is known as the summer capital of the Philippines because if its cool weather.  During the hot summer months, Filipinos trek to this mountain resort city by the hundreds of thousands to escape the sweltering temperatures in the lowland areas.  This is Baguio City, developed by the Americans in the early 1900’s, who found it to be an ideal site for a future city and summer retreat, especially for officers and employees of the Insular Government. It was designed for a population of 30,000 people, but today Baguio is home to 300,000, including over 20,000 South Koreans (and counting).

Many Koreans have found Baguio a suitable place to study English at local universities because of the relatively low cost of enrollment with no entrance exams required.  But more importantly, Baguio weather is comparable to the spring and autumn weather in their homeland. The Philippines’ Bureau of Immigration says that South Koreans come to Baguio on tourist visas and extensions thereof, student visas, and lately, to establish local businesses.

In recognition of the contribution of South Koreans to the city’s economy, tourism and overpopulation, the Baguio City Council has recently passed a resolution that would change the name of Baguio to Korea City.  Council members argued that Baguio has lost its allure anyway because of the local government’s failure to solve many of the city’s social, economic and environmental problems.  They believe that by adopting a new name, the city can bounce back and be the great city it once was. “This will attract even more Koreans to settle in the city, resulting in a unique cultural mix and creating a viable and progressive business climate,” said one council member.  He added that ‘Korea’ rhymes perfectly well with the name of the region Baguio belongs to — Cordillera.

Start practicing to say “Korea in the Cordillera.”

PHILIPPINES ROLLS OUT NEW AMBITIOUS TOURISM CAMPAIGN

Manila, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – “It’s More Fun in the Philippines!” No longer. After many years using this campaign mantra to entice foreigners and Filipino expatriates to visit the Philippines, the Department of Toursim (DOT) is finally retiring the much-maligned catch phrase.

DOT is unveiling a new tourism campaign titled, “The Philippines is Better in a Rolce Royce.”  No taxpayer dollars will be used by DOT since the new campaign is fully funded by the elite British car company. Rolce Royce recently opened its very first showroom in Manila.

In explaining the new tourism theme, DOT Secretary Ramon Jimenez, Jr. said that one of the biggest failures of the past tourism campaign is the seemingly hopeless traffic situation encountered by visitors to Manila and other Philippine cities.  Jimenez said. “We wanted to take a negative situation and turn it around to sound more appealing to tourists.”

As part of a billion-dollar agreement with DOT, Rolce Royce will roll out hundreds of  their used cars and lease them to taxicab operators.  The goal is to eventually replace all dilapidated taxi cabs with Rolce Royces.  “In an ideal situation, cab riders, especially tourists will have a pleasant experience even while stuck in traffic. What a better way to get stuck in traffic than inside a Rolce Royce,” Jimenez said.

So the next time you visit the Philippines, hop into a Rolce Royce. You won’t even notice the horrendous traffic.  And while in it, open up a bottle of ice-cold San Miguel beer!

CATHOLIC CHURCH SAYS MYSTERIOUS BRIGHT LIGHT OVER HAWAII SKIES IS OF DIVINE NATURE

Honolulu, Hawaii (The Adobo Chronicles) – Hawaii residents were stunned and puzzled by a bright white light that went zigzagging across the skies in Ohau, Kauai, Maui and the Big Island. It happened around 7:30  p.m. on Tuesday. Theories ranged from cloud formation to a plane crashing to a missile launching.

Today the Catholic Archdiocese of Honolulu issued a statement confirming that the sighting was of divine nature. “It simpy confirms what many of us already know – that Hawaii is Paradise ” the statement said.

Civilian authorties immediately downplayed the archdiocese’s statement and said that the phenomenon was caused by “gas emitting from a launched test missile, interacting with the sun as it began to set under the islnds’ clear skies.”

But the Catholic Bishops insisted that only a higher power can bring about such a magnificient sky show, and only in a place like Hawaii that’s totally blessed with great Aloha spirit.

This morning, thousands of residents and tourisits were seen flocking to the St. Augustine By The Sea Catholic Church directly across from Waikiki Beach to give thanks and praise for the great blessing bestowed upon Hawaii.
