High Demand For ‘Labanderas’ In The U.S., Thanks To Donald Trump

5EC1B98B-A92B-46CC-A8BA-40665B0CC27B.jpegWASHINGTON, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles, Washington Bureau) – What was once thought as a dying breed of labanderas (laundry ladies) seems to be staging a big comeback — in the United States.

Thanks to Donald Trump’s ‘America First’ policy, steep tarriffs have been imposed on washing machines and solar products.  As a result, middle-income American families who can no longer afford the high cost of washing machines and clothes driers are resorting to hand washing and setting up clotheslines in their homes and apartments.

But this has also increased the demand for labanderas. Americans are now willing to sponsor the work visas of foreign nationals from Mexico and the Philippines and provide them gainful employment as live-in laundry ladies. (Many Americans realize they get extra perks when employing labanderas: their clothes get ironed as well!)

3F2285C1-43CE-415F-BDD7-D15CD77E86A1MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – There’s been so much back and forth regarding the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) decision to revoke the media business license of Rappler due to the latter’s violation of the Constitutional provision on foreign ownership.

We caught up with Rappler CEO Maria Ressa at the U.S. Embassy in Manila where she was trying to renew her expired visa.  Here’s the full transcript of our interview:

AC: Your reaction to the SEC decision?

Ressa: Suppression of Press Freedom.

AC: SEC says that Rappler violated the Constitution.

Ressa: Curtailment of Press Freedom.

AC: Do you now deny that Omidyar Network has an investment in Rappler?

Ressa: There is no Press Freedom in the Philippines.

AC: Asec Mocha Uson has invited you to apply for accredition as a blogger and be part of the Malacañang Press Corps.  Will you accept?

Ressa: I’m a journalist.  Press Freedom is under attack!

AC: What are your immediate plans now that Rappler’s license has been revoked:

Ressa: To keep on saying ‘There is No Press Freedom in the Philippines.’

SEC Revokes Media License Of The Adobo Chronicles

5E47E981-716E-4DA5-851C-135B375B0429MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – First, it was Rappler.  Now, it’s The Adobo Chronicles.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has cancelled the media license of The Adobo Chronicles (AC) effective immediately.

In issuing the revocation order, SEC said that AC has misrepresented itself for claiming it was a satire site.

”As a matter of fact,” SEC said, ‘most of its news stories are not only factual or based on truths, it has consistently predicted news developments that the legitimate news media would later report.”

SEC also clarified that unlike Rappler, AC has no issue about foreign ownership, since it is based in California and is therefore not subject to the restrictions of the 1987 Philippine Constitution.

SEC gave AC 30 days to refile its Philippine license application and revise it from satire to legitimate news, based overseas.
