Manila, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – In one of its giant marquee signs, McDonald’s admitted that the international fastfood burger chain is number one everywhere except in the Philippines where the fat stupid happy bee reigns supreme. McDonald’s, was, of course, referring to the uber famous Filipino fastfood chain, Jollibee. image

Now, another U.S.-based fastfood chain, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) faces a multi-million dollar lawsuit after it released its latest commercial which pokes fun at Jollibee’s most popular menu item, chicken joy.

The fat stupid happy bee has had it with unfair commercial practices by KFC and is suing Colonel Sanders for ads portrarying chicken joy as chicken sad (see photo of KFC ad).

A spokesperson for Jollibee told The Adobo Chronicles that KFC went too far and hit below the belt by insulting its top menu seller. “Jollibee understands that it is operating in a free market society, but KFC needs to understand it won’t get away with unfair advertising ” the spokesperson said.

In the law suit, Jollibee claims that the chicken joy photo used by KFC in its ad was clearly photoshopped to look bland, soggy and non-crispy.

In addition to its hundreds of outlets in the Philippines, Jollibee has franchise stores in the U.S., including Hawaii, California, Washington, Nevada, New York, New Jersey and Chicago. Jollibee sells hamburgers, chicken, spaghetti and popular Filipino fare like lumpia, pancit and bangus (milk fish).

JOLLIBEE CHICKEN JOY AIRDROP FOR PHILIPPINE MARINES: MCDONALD’S, KFC CRY FOUL

imagePuerto Princesa, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) –  The Ayungin Shoal in the West Philippine Sea is among the disputed territories between China and the neighboring countries. Both the Philippines and China have laid claim to the shoal, where a Philippine navy vessel, the BRB Sierra Madre, has been grounded for months now.

Since its grounding, the Philippine military has been standing guard and protecting the vessel, replenishing both troops and supplies, despite several attempts by the Chinese Coast Guard to block the Philippine operations.

Yesterday, as part of its supply replenishment, a Philippine Navy plane airdropped  several packages of food supply for the Filipino navymen currently stationed at the grounded vessel. The packages consisted of the popular chicken joy from Jollibee.image

Upon learning of the special airdrop, both McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) cried foul and accused the Philippine military of unfair business practice. “We have been at a great disadvantage, because the chicken joy airdrop gave Jollibee free advertising,” officials of McDonald’s and KFC claimed. ” We could have provided complimentary chicken McNuggets and original KFC chicken for the troops,” they added.

McDonald’s and KFC are filing a joint formal complaint against the Philippine military before the Department of Trade.

The rivaly between McDonald’s and Jollibee in the Philippines is no secret in the business circuit.

Jollibee Testifies Before Philippine Senate On Pork Barrel Scam

imageManila, Philippines – The fat, stupid, happy bee is once again making headlines in the Philippines, just months after it put the  clown permanently out of business in this Asian country of almost 100 million people. See story on the merger of Jollibee and McDonald’s .

As charges of plunder were filed against Janet Lim-Napoles and ranking members of the Philippine Senate this week, the names of more politicians were implicated in testimonies by whistleblowers in the escalating pork barrel scam. The scam involves the diversion of more than 10 billion pesos of taxpayer money into the coffers of fake non-governmental organizations (NGOs) as well as into the pockets of national and local politicians.

In a privilege speech in the Senate, Senator Jinggoy Estrada, one of the Senators charged in the scam, decried what he termed “selective justice” by being singled out among many others who have personally benefited from this money scandal. During  his speech, Estrada suggested that Jollibee, one of the most successful food business enterprises in the country, also benefited from the pork barrel. Estrada did not reveal any details of the alleged involvement of Jollibee in the scam.

Yesterday, Jollibee was summoned to the floor of Congress to answer the allegation by Estrada.

Under oath, Jollibee made a very brief statement at the hearing, then took the Fifth, saying he refuses to answer any questions from the senators on the grounds that he might incriminate himself.

His brief statement: “I can assure this respectable chamber and our millions of loyal customers that Jollibee’s hamburgers are not tainted in any way by pork.  Our burgers are 100% beef.”
