Senatorial Candidate Actress Alma Moreno Consoles Manny Pacquiao: No Worries, There’s Still Advan Shoes

imagePARAÑAQUE, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – BFF: Best Friends Forever. Parañaque City Councilor, former film actress and candidate for Philippine senator Alma Moreno took to her Twitter account today to console her friend and party-mate Manny Pacquiao after the latter was dropped by Nike from its product endorsement contract with the Filipino champion boxer.

Nike severed its relationship with the boxer and senatorial candidate after he made disparaging comments about gay men and women, comparing them to (worse than) animals.

Moreno and Pacquiao are in the same senatorial slate of Vice President (and candidate for president) Jejomar Binay’s United Nationalist Alliance (UNA). All three are against legalizing samne-sex marriage.

In her Twitter account, Moreno told Pacquiao: “okay lang yan pareng @mannypacquiao, may Advan shoes pa naman” (That’s okay, friend @mannypacquiao, there’s still Advan shoes).

Advan shoes is a brand of Philippine-made sneakers.

It wasn’t clear whether or not Pacquiao was pleased or consoled by Moreno’s comment.

Nike Drops Manny Pacquiao, UNA Drops Jejomar Binay

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Apparel giant Nike has terminated its relationship with boxer Manny Pacquiao after his recent inflammatory comments about the LGBT community.

“We find Manny Pacquiao’s comments abhorrent,” the statement reads. “Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community. We no longer have a relationship with Manny Pacquiao.”

Pacquiao had compared gay men and women to animals – in fact, worse than animals.

Just hours after the Nike announcement, the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) dropped Jejomar Binay as its presidential standard bearer, a decision prompted by recent statements by the Vice President supporting Pacquiao’s position on same-sex marriage.

“We understand now that as a political party, we cannot discriminate against anyone, including the gay and lesbian community and that we must adhere to the separation of church and state,” an UNA memorandum said.

“Binay’s support for Pacquiao and his stand on same-sex marriage (which is basically following the Catholic Church’s position on the issue) will make it difficult for us to win in the elections,” the memo added.

Meanwhile, two other presidential candidates, Mar Roxas and Miriam Defensor-Santiago, are reportedly reconsidering their position.  They are known to oppose legalizing same-sex marriage in the Philippines. The other two candidates, Grace Poe and Rodrigo Duterte are in favor.

Philippine Presidential Candidates Gear Up For Baguio’s Panagbenga Festival

imageBAGUIO CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Some 2.5 Million people are expected to attend this year’s festivities for the annual Panagbenga Festival in Baguio City, the Philippines’ summer capital.

The month-long celebration of the blooming of flowers begins February 1st and will culminate in a grand street parade later in the month.

2016, of course, is presidential election year in the Philippines, and it would unwise for the candidates to ignore this enormous opportunity to campaign.

Today, The Adobo Chronicles has confirmed that all five major presidential candidates will participate in the street parade, and all have chosen their respective costumes and attires for the grand celebration

The five candidates are Vice President Jejomar Binay, former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas (who will be parading with his wife, broadcaster Korina Sanchez), Senators Grace Poe and Miriam Defensor-Santiago, and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.

While none of the candidates revealed their chosen costume, they allowed us to publish an artist’s rendition of how they will look like in the parade. (See photo)
