BEST SUPER BOWL COMMERCIAL GOES TO … HAWAIIAN AIRLINES

imageGLENDALE, Arizona (The Adobo Chronicles) – It’s Super Bowl time, and next to the actual football match between the Patriots and the Seahawks, the most awaited moments are the 60-minute ads that will be aired during the live telecast to be beamed worldwide.

Companies cough up millions of dollars for an advertising spot during the game, and it has always been a competition on which is the best commercial.

Well, this year, it’s hands down — Hawaiian Airlines tops the competition, airing a commercial promoting its regular flights from the U.S. Mainland to the Philippines.

Many have read novelist Dan Brown’s most recent book, ‘Inferno’  in which he described Manila as the “Gates of Hell.”

Hawaiian Airlines’ commercial hit the bull’s eye with its tag line, “Fly to the Gates of Hell, with a stopover in Paradise.”  It is a promotion for its flight from the U.S. Mainland to Manila with a stopover in Hawaii.

Philippine Airlines is reportedly very upset  because the Hawaiian Airlines commercial is sure to negatively impact its ticket sales.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles) –  Ron Klain, the Democratic power broker and Washington attorney appointed by President Barack Obama in October to manage the America’s response to its isolated Ebola outbreaks, is set to leave his newly created job on March 1.

Klain was appointed in October 17 last year as the Centers for Disease Control and other government agencies grappled to contain the public’s jitters over several Ebola infection cases. He is set to return to his previous job in the private sector.

Not so fast.

In an announcement today that suprised many, Klain included, The White House said Obama is appointing the Ebola Czar as the new Measles Czar.  The action came in the wake of the recent outbreak of measles cases, largely traced to the Disneyland theme park in Southern California.

Once thought to have been eliminated in the U.S., the highly contagious disease is back with a vengeance, thanks to world travel and the growing movement against vaccinations in the U.S.

Dozens of confirmed measles cases have been reported in recent weeks.  In contrast, one can count confirmed Ebola cases in the U.S. with less than five fingers,  with only one recorded death from the virus.

In an interview with Klain, the lawyer informed The Adobo Chronicles that he was inclined to accept the nomination primarily to make up for the salary he received doing practically nothing as the country’s Ebola Czar. “This would be a great way to give back,” Klain said of his new nomination.

All’s well that ends well.

POPE FRANCIS CONFIRMS HE WILL VISIT THE U.S. IN SEPTEMBER

imageON BOARD THE PAPAL PLANE TO THE VATICAN (The Adobo Chronicles) – In his very own words, Pope Francis has confirmed that he will be visiting the United States this fall, with stops in New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

The pontiff made this announcement on board the Philippine Air Lines plane that took him from the Philippines to Rome.  Francis just concluded a highly successful visit to the Philippines and Sri Lanka.

Immediately after the announcement, various U.S. agencies and groups went on overdrive and announced plans and concerns about this coming historic visit.

  • The Republican-controlled Congress is very nervous about its stance on global warming.  The Pope is expected to issue an encyclical shortly, urging action on climate change which is contrary to what Republicans believe and stand for.
  • House Speaker John Boehner, a Roman Catholic, is considering proposing new legislation to tax the rich and provide tax breaks for the middle class and the poor, just to impress the pope. Francis is known to be a staunch advocate for the poor.
  • The U.S. Department of Justice is reportedly working nonstop to accelerate the filing of criminal charges against American priests charged with child sexual abuse, and to resolve these cases before the fall.
  • Law enforcement agencies in New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. are putting together plans to deal with crowd control during the Pope’s visit.  They are seriously considering similar measures adopted by the police in Manila during the Pope’s visit.  They will require police officers and traffic enforcers to wear adult diapers to prevent them from having to leave their posts to answer the call of nature during the Pope’s public appearances.
  • New York officials want the Pope’s visit to be alcohol-free.  They are proposing to close all Irish pubs in New York for the day.
  • President Obama promised not to complain about the American Catholic clergy during his welcome speech at the White House. Obama said that what Philippines President NoyNoy Aquino did in Manila during the pope’s visit was utterly childish.
  • Security for the pope will be a top priority. The three states to be visited by Francis have ordered drones to beef up their surveillance measures.
  • St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York will be renamed St. Francis Cathedral in time for the papal visit.
  • There will be widespread protests in major West Coast cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle and Denver for not being included in the papal itinerary.
