ADOBO CHRONICLES’ BEST AND WORST DRESSED ON THE SONA RED CARPET

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles® ) – What a difference a year makes.

Last year, Senator Nancy Binay was judged the worst dressed on the State of the Nation Address (SONA) red carpet, wearing what looked like a Korean-style dress turned into an air balloon.

This year, Binay bounced back from last year’s embarrassment and impressed fashionistas with her purplish blue terno designed by the same artist that made her gown in 2014.

Hands down, this year’s worst gown award went to  Senator Loren Legarda who, like last year, went for the indigenous, native look.

Her 2015 stunner consisted of what seemed to be  black leotards she would wear in her yoga class, accented by a colorful native-woven fabric and locally-made pendant and handbag.  She even wore a Marikina-made pair of shoes to focus attention on the need to patronize products that are ‘sariling atin’ (made in the Philippines).

Many observers have wondered what in the world has become of the former television news anchor who regaled viewers on the boob tube with such high fashion and professional bearing.

But one thing is for sure: her ‘gown’ didn’t cost her a penny.  And maybe, that’s good.

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles®) – Sometimes, a picture is worth a thousand words.  But then, at other times, it means nothing.

Philippine social media was abuzz with rumors that a youthful member of President NoyNoy Aquino’s cabinet took advantage of the State of the Nation Address (SONA) Monday night to propose to presidential sister Kris Aquino.

The rumors all began with a photo posted on Facebook, showing Joel Villanueva, director general of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), down on his knees and seemingly begging the actress and television host to marry him.

Aquino was quick to deny the rumors, but admitted she felt a little kilig (to tremble in a flirtatious way) by the photo. After all, Villanueva used to be a basketball player like her ex-husband James Yap.

TESDA is the government agency tasked to manage and supervise technical education and skills development in the Philippines. It was created by virtue of Republic Act 7796, otherwise known as the “Technical Education and Skills Development Act of 1994”.

Villanueva was appointed by the president in 2010. The director general position carries with it a cabinet rank.

Aquino is known to be a celebrity who can’t keep her personal life and romantic encounters under wraps. She has previously gone public with her relationship to a married politician who was also a former professional basketball player, Joey Marquez.  Aquino accused Marquez of domestic violence and giving her a sexually-transmitted disease.

She has also been romantically linked to Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista, a former child actor.  No, he was not a basketball player.

We are often told that pictures don’t lie. That’s absolutely not true. With or without Photoshop.

PHILIPPINES PRESIDENT NOW HOLDS GUINNESS WORLD RECORD FOR LONGEST SONA

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles® ) – It’s official. Philippines President NoyNoy Aquino now holds the Guinness World Record for the longest State of the Nation Address (SONA).

Aquino delivered his last SONA Monday night before a joint session of Congress. From his first word to the last, it took him two hours and ten minutes, beating all other lenghty SONAs anywhere in the world.

In the U.S., most presidents keep their State of the Union Address (SOTU) under one hour, although occasionally they would go over. President Bill Clinton holds the U.S. record for the longest SOTU for his January 27, 2000 address which ran for one hour, twenty eight minutes and forty nine seconds.

Aquino’s SONA was occasionally interrupted by brief applause, yawns, a sip of water and his smoker’s cough.

The Guinness World Record will go down in history as the greatest legacy of any Philippine president, dead or alive.
