NEW YORK, New York (The Adobo Chronicles® ) – On September 21, the world commemorates the International Day of Peace as designated by the United Nations General Assembly.  It also marks the U.N. body’s opening day of its annual meeting.

To create greater awareness of the occasion, Burger King has proposed opening up a pop-up store in a parking lot between McDonald’s and Burger King in Atlanta, Georgia.

The goal? To operate one restaurant for one day staffed by employees of both companies and selling a burger called the McWhopper, a blend of the Big Mac and the Whopper, the best-selling burgers at McDonald’s and Burger King.

Sales proceeds would be donated to Peace One Day, a nonprofit group seeking to raise awareness of the International Day of Peace.

To make it a truly international event, the Philippines’ top fast food company, Jollibee, is joining the effort and will add its famous spaghetti to the day’s special meal package. Jollibee will even throw in a medium soda and a small cup of frozen yogurt.

September 21 also happens to be the anniversary of the official proclamation of Martial Law by the late Ferdinand E. Marcos in 1972.

“We’ll be hitting two birds with one stone,” said Ernesto Tan Mantiong, Chief Executive Officer of Jollibee. “It shows our commitment to world peace and the rule of law.”

The McDonald’s-Burger King-Jollibee meal combo will be called McWhopper Joy. (Jollibee’s famous chicken is called ‘Chicken Joy.’)

SAN FRANCISCO’S A&PI WELLNESS CENTER RECEIVES CARE PACKAGE FROM HOMOPHOBIC OREGON CAKE SHOP

SAN FRANCISCO, California (The Adobo Chronicles® ) – San Francisco’s Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center, a non-profit health organization serving the needs of San Franciscans, including A&PI LGBTs, recently received a surprise gift in the mail:  a cake with an inscription, “We really do love you.”

The gift came from Sweet Cakes by Melissa, owned by Melissa and Aaron Klein, who were recently ordered by the Oregon Labor Commission to pay $135,000 in damages to a lesbian couple for whom they refused to make a wedding cake.

The Kleins cited their Christian beliefs against same-sex marriage in denying the services.  The Commission ruled they discriminated against the women on the basis of their sexual orientation.

Apparently, A&PI Wellness Center was among the ten West Coast LGBTQ organizations that would be receiving a cake from the Kleins.

It would have been a sweet gesture from Sweet Cakes by Melissa, except that the package came with a DVD of  Audacity,  an anti-LGBTQ film created by New Zealand televangelist Ray Comfort. The DVD is about the work of Christians to “save” doomed LGBT people.

As of press time, the Wellness Center was still deciding what to do with the cake.

This could very well  be a classic case of “You can’t have your cake and eat it too.”

We suggest a bake sale.

SF CHINATOWN RESTAURANT SHUT DOWN FOR SERVING HORSE MEAT

SAN FRANCISCO, California (The Adobo Chronicles® ) – A popular restaurant in San Francisco’s Chinatown was shut down today by the Department of Health for serving horse meat.

The United States Department Agriculture (USDA) has not approved the sale of horse meat for human consumption in the country, although it can be used in pet food.

We can’t name the restaurant pending the filing of charges in court tomorrow, but we obtained a copy of its menu which, indeed, indicated that it was serving horse meat.

The menu item in question was “beef tenderloin with stallions.”

The restaurant owner told The Adobo Chronicles that it was all a matter of misunderstanding (and typo)  on its menu.  The item meant to read, “beef tenderloin with scallions.”
