MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – The December 30 wedding of film stars Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera was undoubtedly the wedding of the year by Philippine standards — extravagant, pompous and star-studded. Their Seven Million-peso, 12-foot wedding cake even made international headlines. It, however, failed to break the current Guinness World Record for the largest wedding cake.

But that was 2014.  It is now 2015, and another Filipino Royal Wedding is coming up soon. February 15, 2015 to be exact.

It is the wedding of Philippines Senator Chiz Escudero and actress Heart Evangelista. The couple got engaged last August 23 and are scheduled to tie the knot the day after Valentine’s at Balesin Island Club.

All eyes, are of course, on the couple’s wedding cake.  How will it compare to the Dantes-Rivera cake, and more importantly, will it break the current Guinness record?

The world’s largest wedding cake on record weighed 6.818 tonnes (15,032 lb) and was made by chefs at the Mohegan Sun Hotel and Casino, Uncasville, Connecticut, USA and displayed at their New England bridal showcase on 8 February 2004.

The Adobo Chronicles has learned that the couple has chosen a cake designer.  While the design and dimensions of the cake remain secret, we can confirm who has been commissioned to do the baking and designing honors. Her name is Judy Uson.  Read more about this celebrity cake designer and chef in the online magazine Positively Filipino.

Whether or not the cake will make it to the Guinness World Records remains to be seen.  Stay tuned.

PRICE OF BALUT IN CALIFORNIA TO INCREASE 100%

imageSacramento, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – Balut-loving Filipinos and others are in for some bad news effective January 1, 2015. Balut prices will increase 100%.

Balut is a duck embryo that is boiled alive and eaten in the shell. It is commonly sold as street food in the Philippines and other countries in Southeast Asia, such as Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. It is widely available at Asian supermarkets in California and other states in the U.S.

The culprit in the price hike is California’s Proposition 2, or the Standards for Confining Farm Animals, which was passed by voters in 2008 and which takes into effect January 1, 2015.

Proposition 2 created a new state statute that prohibits the confinement of farm animals -especially chicken and duck  – in a manner that does not allow them to turn around freely, lie down, stand up, and fully extend their limbs.

Duck raisers in California had to expand their farms and cages to comply with the new law, costing them an arm and a leg, and then some, to maintain their business.

“We have no choice but increase our balut prices in order to recover our additional investments,” said one duck raiser and balut supplier.

So balut lovers should be prepared to pay an average price of $6 per egg beginning in 2015. In Philippine pesos, that’s P260!

STARBUCKS TO MERGE WITH DUNKIN’ DONUTS, PEET’S COFFEE WITH KRISPY KREME

SBDDSeattle, Washington (The Adobo Chronicles) – There is so much competition in the food and beverage industry that it has come down to the survival of the fittest. And smartest.

First there was news of McDonald’s phasing out 8 menu items beginning in January, including the Big Mac and apple pie. The Chicago-based international food chain has seen a decline of its revenue ever since the introduction of the popular Filipino fast food company Jollibee into the U.S. and international markets.  Jollibee sells burgers and chicken, along with other Filipino delicacies like sweet spaghetti and breakfast rice plates.

Now, with stiff competition posed by its competitors, Seattle-based Starbucks has agreed to a merger with Dunkin’ Donuts, the American global doughnut company and coffeehouse chain based in Canton, Massachusetts.  Like McDonald’s, Starbucks has experienced declining sales with the growing popularity of Peet’s Coffee, Tully’s and Seattle’s Best.

Who eats donuts without coffee? Capitalizing on this  inseparable combination, Starbucks took the bold move of merging with Dunkin’ Donuts as a way to boost its coffee sales.image

Not to be outdone, Peet’s Coffee followed suit and has announced that it has signed an agreement to sell Krispy Kreme Doughnuts at all its locations.

It’s turning out to be a one-stop shop for coffee and doughnuts.
