Philippines Department Of Transportation Will Implement Jeepney Modernization Program Next Month

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – The iconic jeepney, the military-style mode of public transportation unique to the Philippines will soon be extinct.

The Department of Transportation will start implementing the Jeepney Modernization Program starting next month in two pilot areas — Metro Manila and Baguio City.

In Metro Manila, the dilapidated, smoke-belching jeepneys will be phased out and replaced by modern, evironmentally-friendly vehicles (see design above.)  Some units will even feature airconditioning.

In Baguio City, the jeepneys will be replaced by gas-free units featuring bright-colored hair (see photo above.)

If successful, the program will be rolled out in other major cities and towns in the Philippines.

Oh what fun it is to ride…

New York Times: Philippines Is A Killer Country!

IMG_1378NEW YORK, New York (The Adobo Chronicles, New York Bureau) – Remember that New York Times editorial asking the world to condemn Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte?

Of course we all know that the basis of the editorial was a complaint filed before the International Criminal Court (ICC) by a fame-hugging Filipino lawyer who represents a perjured witness.  It all boils down to NYT’s assertion — based on news reports it mimics– that Duterte is a “killer.”

Well, NYT went a step further.

In a recent headline, the Pulitzer Prize-winning publication accused the entire country of being a killer! Just like its president.

It’s all in the headline…

(Oh, in case you haven’t noticed, the news report was about the Philippine House of Representatives.  Yet NYT chose to use an accompanying photo featuring some woman.  No, the woman was not a killer).

Philippine Court Orders Transfer Of Janet Napoles To Taguig Jail, Will Room With Senator De Lima

IMG_1375MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – The days of “solitary confinement” for jailed Senator Leila De Lima will soon be over.  She has been assigned a new roommate by the Court.

The Sandigangbayan First Division has ordered the detention of alleged pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City pending her plunder trial in the case of former Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr.

The Court said there was no sufficient proof regarding Napoles’s claim that she would be safer at the National Bureau of Investigation custodial center amid supposed threats to her life.  It therefore ordered Napoles transferred from her present detention cell at the Correctional Institution for Women in Madaluyong City to Camp Bagong Diwa where De Lima is now jailed.

It may take some time for the two women to warm up to each other since both are known to be strong-willed and stubborn.  But the Court believes that eventually, their frailties as women will eventually endear them to each other.
