ADOBO CHRONICLES’ PERSON OF THE YEAR: MIAA GENERAL MANAGER JOSE ANGEL HONRADO

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Each year, The Adobo Chronicles names its Person of the Year, choosing from among candidates who have made a significant impact on news and social media by grabbing the headlines for heroic deeds and statements relating to national or international events.

In 2013, we named Hollywood actor Jackie Chan, who has repeatedly survived news about his untimely demise. Last year, we named former Philippine Interior Secretary and now presidential candidate Mar Roxas for being the “man for the masses.”

For 2015, we were very conflicted.

Our short list included President Aquino, for being in a constant bubble, always proclaiming that the Philippines is the “new darling of Asia,” while ignoring the many ills and perils that the Filipino people continue to endure.

We also considered his sister, television host Kris Aquino, whose penchant for blabbering has made her the ‘queen of gossip,” oftentimes washing her dirty laundry — especially her private and family life — in public.

Transportation Secretary Joseph Abaya was also on our list for the unending woes of Metro Manila’s nightmarish traffic and the beleaguered MRT (light railway) and for proclaiming that these problems “were not fatal.”

But after serious deliberations, our editors have finally made a unanimous choice: Jose Angel Honrado, general manager of the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), under whose watch the now internationally-famous laglag bala became a trademark of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

Laglag bala was an airport scheme in which scrupulous airport personnel “planted” live bullets in bags and luggage of unsuspecting airline passengers for the purpose of extorting money.

The scheme caused the cancellation of international gatherings, business meetings, family reunions by overseas Filipino workers (OFW), and the proliferation of a new cottage industry: plastic wrapping of checked-in luggage at NAIA.

Even President Barack Obama was advised by ther U.S. State Department to wrap his briefcase in plastic upon arriving in Manila for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit meeting last month.

It has also been reported that a Philippine Airlines flight from Honolulu left for Manila with no passengers, only the crew, because confirmed travelers refused to board the plane for fear of being victimized by the scheme once they landed in Manila.

But what made the editors truly convinced about bestowing this 2015 honor to Honrado was his testimony before a Senate hearing in which he told Senator Bongbong Marcos that he had no control over what happens at the airport, essentially confirming that he is being paid as general manager to do absolutely nothing.

Congratulations to our 2015 Person of the Year!

Chihuahua Sues Las Vegas Hotel For Fraudulent Charges

imageLAS VEGAS, Nevada (The Adobo Chronicles) – A 7-year-old Chihuahua mix has filed a lawsuit in Nevada against an unnamed Las Vegas resort and casino hotel for fraudulent charges on her MasterCard.

In the complaint filed today in a Nevada district court, the dog, Robin, said in a sworn statement that she and her owner checked in at the hotel for a two-night stay for Christmas eve and Christmas day.

Soon after checkout, Robin received an email confirmation of the charges during her stay at the hotel.  She was surprised to see unauthorized charges to her MasterCard, including a 12 percent tax, in-room coffee and resort fee.

Robin is not disputing the room fee of $75 per night, but was surprised about being charged tax, since she doesn’t file income taxes and won’t be able to claim the tax as a deduction.

She also claimed in her complaint that she was charged a resort fee of $30 per day plus tax, even if she did not use the swimming pool (and who does, on winter days?), gym, or the hotel’s wi-fi.

Robin was most upset about the coffee charge because she says she has adopted a caffeine-free diet for 7 years now.

Donald Trump: Thumbs Up To Obama’s Plan To Deport Undocumented Immigrants Beginning In January

imageWASHINGTON, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles) – In a rare show of bi-partisanship, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump today embraced President Barack Obama’s plan to deport tens of thousands of undocumented immigrants beginning in January.

Undocumented families in the U.S. could be rounded up and deported , according to a report that has shocked immigrants rights’ advocates and provoked condemnation from Democratic presidential hopefuls.

The Department of Homeland Security is preparing for raids that would see hundreds of recently arrived immigrants deported, according to a report in The Washington Post.

Citing anonymous sources, the report said that adults and children “would be detained wherever they can be found and immediately deported”.

The operation would focus on people who entered the US from its south-west border since the start of 2014, many of whom are assumed to be escaping gang violence and institutional collapse in Central America. It would also focus on people who have already been ordered to leave by an immigration judge, according to the Post.

The White House would not confirm if the Obama plan was meant to replace these undocumented immigrants with the 10,000 Syrian refugees that the president had previously announced would be allowed into the country.

“Finally, Obama has come to his senses,” Trump said, emphasizing that “the deportation of undocumented immigrants and creating a border wall to prevent illegal immmigration have always been part of my campaign agenda.”

However, Trump said that the Obama administration’s deportation announcement does not go far enough.

“We need to do more.  We need to also deport  Americans — especially those running for public office — who have divided loyalties between  America and their foreign place of birth or lineage,” the real estate mogul stated.

Trump was obviously referring to his closest rival in the 2016 U.S. presidential race, Senator Ted Cruz, who was  raised in Texas but born in Canada to a Cuban father.

Upon learning of Trump’s comments, Cruz told The Adobo Chronicles: “Look who’s talking.  Here’s my challenge:   I will self deport if Donald does the same.”

Trump was born to a German father and Scottish mother.
