FILIPINO SENATORS PROPOSE NEW PHILANDERING LAW

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Outside of The Vatican, the Philippines is now the only country in the world that denies divorce to the majority of its citizens. It is the last straggler among the most devout of Catholic countries where the church has fought hard to enforce the sanctity of marriage.

Not even Pope Francis, who visited the Philippines earlier this year, seems to be able to soften the stance of the country’s dual-faced politicians and ultra conservative church leaders.(Francis has urged his bishops to take a more forgiving stance toward divorced Catholics. But with divorce being illegal in the Philippines, Francis’ appeal is a moot point.)

Today,  Philippine senators have rejected a proposal to legalize divorce in the Philippines despite surveys showing majority of Filipinos agreed to legalize “irreconcilably separated” couples.

Many legislators admitted that a divorce law would have little to no chance of passing both houses of congress. President Aquino, a devout Catholic, had previously said he does not favor divorce.

In an alternative move, Senator Bongbong Marcos, with full support from his fellow legislators from all sides of the aisle, said he will introduce a bill that would legalize philandering. “It already is a widespread practice in the country,” Marcos said, ” we might as well make it part of the law of our land.”

It is common knowledge that many Filipino politicians are certified philanderers.

Not everyone is happy about the proposed new bill.  Wives of philandering politicians said they will vigorously oppose it. Mistresses of philandering politicians are undecided whether or not to support the bill. They are afraid that their secret affairs with the politicians will be made public once the bill becomes law.

PHILIPPINE CONGRESS OFFICIALLY DECLARED “NO MAN’S LAND”

govManila, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – As the Philippines braced itself for Typhoon Ruby, the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) declared several areas of the capital as “no man’s land.”

As many as 10 districts (barangays)  and two major thoroughfares — Roxas and Espana Boulevards — were expected to experience severe storm surges and flooding. Declaring “no man’s land” means that people are forbidden to visit or stay in those areas for safety reasons.

The MDRRMO is tasked with notifying the public about potential danger and high-risk situations.

Last week, the MDRRMO declared both the Philippine Senate and House of Representatives as “no man’s land,” citing the fact that visiting the Congress buildings would pose a great danger to the taxpaying public.  An MDRRMO spokesperson said that crocodiles abound in both houses and that the public should stay away and refrain from being in contact with the legislators.

MDRRMO is reportedly also considering declaring the Malacanang (presidential palace) and the headquarters of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines as “no man’s land.”

OBAMA TO ISSUE EXECUTIVE ORDER GRANTING AMNESTY TO UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS

imageWashington, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles) – Bowing to pressure from his fellow Democrats who are facing election or reelection this fall, President Obama has said that he will delay executive action aimed at reshaping the nation’s immigration system without congressional approval. Democrats are concerned that immigration executive action at this time would jeopardize their chances of winning the election. Immigration is a hot button issue among voters, Republicans and Democrats alike.

While Obama’s announcement may have frustrated immigration advocates, the president made a promise to issue an executive order right after the November elections that would grant full amnesty to the estimated 11 Million undocumented immigrants now living in the U.S.

Obama, however, said that he will issue the amnesty order only if both the Senate and House of Representatives take control and become the majority party this fall. Currently, the House is controlled by Republicans (234 – 201) and the Senate is controlled by Democrats by a slim majority (53-45, with two independents caucusing with the Democrats).
