MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Move over, AlDub. Make way for a new Pinoy (Filipino) rock star and idol.  His name is Justin Trudeau. Yes, the same Justin Trudeau who is prime minister of Canada.

The young world leader wowed Filipinos — women and men — with his youthful good looks during his Manila visit to attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.  He was mobbed by adoring fans wherever he went, and his photograph wearing the traditional Filipino men’s attire, the barong tagalog, put the Philippines’ top models to shame, literally.

One of the country’s top film production companies, Viva Films, has reportedly offered Trudeau an exclusive contract to appear in at least three Filipino movies in 2016 — opposite actress, TV host and presidential sister Kris Aquino.

The first film is about a woman (Aquino) who falls madly in love with a visiting foreigner who happens to be a married man (Trudeau).

The prime minister is reportedly seriously considering the offer.

COMING SOON TO THE DINNER TABLE : GENETICALLY MODIFIED LECHON

Crunchy and delicious lechon

LOS BAÑOS, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Thursday that the AquAdvantage salmon — developed using growth hormone from Chinook salmon and a gene from an eel-like ocean fish that makes it reach market size twice as quickly as other salmon — has become the first genetically engineered animal approved for American consumption.

AquaBounty Technologies Inc., the Massachusetts company that created the fish, calls it “the world’s most sustainable salmon.” Opponents call it “Frankenfish.”

Almost simultaneously, scientists at the University of the Philippines at Los Baños, Laguna, announced that they have engineered a fast-reproducing, fast-growing pig that is both safe for human consumption and a big boost to lechon production.

Lechon is a popular way of cooking a whole pig by roasting it for hours over a pit of charcoal fire. No Filipino fiesta or family gathering is complete without this traditional delicacy.

The scientists said they have been successful in injecting testosterone from dogs into pigs to make them reproduce faster and become more prolific. A domestic farm pig averages 10 piglets per litter and can have two to three litters per year.

The genetically modified pigs will mature faster. At the same time, lechon roasting time will be cut by almost 50 percent.

Lechon pa more (more lechon), as Filipinos would say!

KRIS AQUINO COMPLAINS OF SUNBURN FROM HOSTING DUTIES AT APEC MEETING

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Television talk show host and presidential sister Kris Aquino used her social media account today to complain about her hosting duties during the just-ended Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit meeting in Manila.

Aquino and her three other sisters were assigned to host the spouses of the world leaders attending the summit in a noontime tour of Manila’s historical sites, including Intramuros, the walled city. Such duty is usually  performed by the APEC host country’s First Lady, but the Philippine president is a bachelor so the task fell into the hands of his sisters.

Posting a photo of herself with just a towel wrapped around her upper torso, Aquino revealed her sunburn resulting from exposure to the scorching tropical Manila sun.

In her post, she likened her sunburn condition to the plight of thousands of Filipino commuters who had to walk many miles under the sun for many days because of the closure of avenues and streets to vehicular traffic (including public transport buses and jeepneys) during the APEC summit. “Quits na tayo,” she told the commuters, a colloquial Filipino phrase that translates into “We’re even, fair and square.”

Aquino told The Adobo Chronicles that she learned a very important lesson as a result of her APEC hosting duties — to always remember to apply sunscreen with at least SPF 50.
