Miss Universe: Another Latina Loses Beauty Crown

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (The Adobo Chronicles, Washington Bureau) – At the Miss Universe pageant, contestants are losing their crowns left and right. Or so it seems.

In last year’s pageant, Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez lost the crown to Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, after wearing it for about four minutes.  Well, actually, the crown belonged to Wurtzbach.  Pageant host Steve Harvey mistakenly announced Miss Philippines as the first runner-up and Miss Colombia as the winner.

So Miss Colombia lost the crown by a mistake.

Another Latina, 2016 Miss Universe Puerto Rico Kristhielee Caride, just lost her crown, not because of a mistake, but because of attitude. Bad attitude.

The Boricua beauty queen was stripped of her title on Thursday for not wanting to participate in interviews or take photos.

“I saw the damage that she was doing and the damage that she was doing to the organization,” said Desirée Lowry, the director of Miss Puerto Rico Universe, when announcing the organization’s decision to take away Caride’s crown.

Caride, who represented Isabela, has been replaced by Brenda Jiménez, a current biology and sociology student from Aguadilla.

So ladies, if you’re thinking of joining the Miss Universe pageant, make sure you have a good attitude.  And be prepared for mistakes. Not yours, but by the pageant host.

Miss Colombia May Get To Wear The Miss Universe Crown After All

NEW YORK, New York (The Adobo Chronicles, Washington Bureau) – Miss Colombia 2015 Ariadna Gutierrez wore the Miss Universe crown for about four minutes during last year’s pageant, only to be taken away because of a mistake by host Steve Harvey.  That crown, of course, belongs to the real winner, Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.

But lo and behold, Gutierrez may get to wear the crown in the near future and keep it until the next Miss Universe is chosen.

The reason?  Wurtzbach is dating People magazine’s “sexiest doctor alive,” Mikhail Varshavski. The couple confirmed in their respective social media accounts that they are, indeed, seeing each other.  In fact, Wurtzbach changed her Facebook profile to “In a relationship.”

Remember, the official rules of the Miss Universe Pageant, one of which says that “if for any reason the new Miss Universe cannot fulfill her obligations, the first runner-up will become Miss Universe.?” That first runner-up would, of course, be Gutierrez.

So Gutierrez is hoping that Wurtzbach and Varshavski decide to get married soon which would then disqualify the Filipina beauty from continuing her reign.  After all, the pageant cannot have a Mrs. Universe.

After Failing To Tax Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach’s Miss Universe Crown, BIR’s Kim Henares Goes After AlDub

QUEZON CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – AlDub, the popular noontime TV love team of Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza—has become the country’s hottest endorser of consumer products. In just seven months since its debut on TV in July 2015, AlDub’s combined earnings have reached P200 million—based on conservative estimates by sources interviewed by Inquirer Lifestyle.

The revelation caught the attention of the Philippines’ chief tax woman, Commissioner of the Bureau Internal Revenue (BIR) Kim Henares who is known for her tough stance in going after celebrities for the purposes of taxing their earnings. Among Herares’ celebrity pursuits is Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao.

When Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach first returned to Manila after winning the pageant, Henares wanted to tax the $300,000 crown worn by the Filipino queen. Naturally Henares was unsuccessful because Wurtbach’s crown was just “on loan” for the duration of her reign as Miss Universe.

So when Henares learned of the advertising earnings of Richards and Mendoza, the BIR commissioner wasted no time in issuing a summons to the two celebrities, asking them to appear in her office with certified true copies of their earnings statements so that she could accurately calculate the taxes owed by the couple.

The timing of the summons was questioned by some of the presidential candidates who hinted that the Aquino administration’s candidate, Mar Roxas, needed some campaign funds infusion for his weak showing in national polls. But The Adobo Chronicles could not independently confirm whether Henares’ move was related to Roxas’ campaign.
