(VIDEO) FILIPINOS GREET APEC WORLD LEADERS WITH PEOPLE POWER

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles ) –  World leaders attending the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Manila are having a unique historical lesson by experiencing first hand how Filipinos stage a people power revolution, similar to that which ousted dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos.  It is a different time, but the same venue: EDSA, Metro Manila’s main, crowded thoroughfare.

The Manila government took over several lanes on EDSA and made it off limits to motorists and pedestrains that are not part  of the APEC meeting.  The result, as expected, was massive traffic gridlock for Filipino motorists.

Commuters unable to avail of public transportation had to  take to the streets and walk for miles on end to and from work. A sea of people can be seen during commute times, mimicking massive street protests which are not uncommon in Metro Manila.

A new people power strategy was born as motorists sounded their horns, shouted and jeered as dignitaries breezed through in their limousines on the opposite side of the barricaded avenues.

Filipinos sure know how to welcome their guests.  This time, it wasn’t really a welcome gesture.

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – World leaders will gather in Manila this week for the annual Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, and the Philippines is putting its best foot forward to make the meeting a huge and memorable success — for the visitors.

Meanwhile, Filipinos have been asked by their goverment to make ‘small’ sacrifices:

  1. Postpone or cancel travel plans because international and domestic commercial flights into and out of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) have  been cancelled to make way for arriving and departing APEC dignitaries and delegates.
  2. Give up a week’s worth of wages and/or productivity due to the closure of private and public offices.
  3. Give up a week’s worth of new knowledge because of the closure of schools.
  4. Expect interruption of Internet connectivity because the cyberspace has been reserved for exclusive APEC use only.
  5. Give up two lanes of busy roadways (see photo) to ensure that APEC delegates will not be late for their meetings and cocktail receptions.
  6. For residents of high-rise condominiums along or near the APEC meeting venues: keep their curtains closed at all times and avoid hanging out in their balconies — for security reasons.
  7. For the homeless population: give up a week’s worth of panhandling earnings because they will be rounded up and hidden from public view.
  8. There will be shortened hours for shopping at all Metro Manila malls and mega malls.
  9. Postpone or cancel all romantic dates along the famed Manila Bay and Roxas Boulevard, site of the APEC meetings — again for security reasons.
  10. Last but not the least, there will be no episode of AlDub, the street series of the popular noontime TV Show, ‘Eat Bulaga’ on GMA Channel 7.

It might as well be ‘Holy Week’ for all Filipino catholics!

On the positive side, there will be no cases of laglag bala at NAIA all week!

LAGLAG BALA: TOURISM SECRETARY TELLS FILIPINOS, MEDIA TO SHUT UP

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Hush!  Philippine Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez Jr. urged Filipinos and the media to STFU (shut up) because it is hurting the country’s tourism industry.

Jimenez was referring to the laglag bala  or tanim bala scheme at Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in which airport personnel allegedly “plant” bullets in bags of unsuspecting airline passengers in order to extort money.

Speaking at a weekly forum at the Luneta Hotel, Jimenez said reports on the tanim bala demonstrate the media’s tendency to discuss issues “to death until it actually injures our own interest.”

“I am very concerned on both ends of it — not only because it is a symptom of corruption that we have yet to uproot, it is also a symptom that sometimes as a country we don’t know when to stop talking about something,” he said.

Jimenez went as far as recommending to President Aquino to change the administration’s anti-corruption mantra from Daang Matuwid (straight path) to Daang Matahimik (quiet path).
