QUEZON CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Aldub fans might not be happy about this news.  There is a new reality TV show that’s brewing on ABS-CBN, and it’s called “Housemaids Academy” which producers think will break all reality show ratings in the Philippines.

The Adobo Chronicles learned that the network is about to announce a casting call for Filipino domestic helpers who want to train in the Housemaids Academy and earn a contract to work in Hong Kong or Singapore.

Housemaids Academy is for real.  It is a government-run training center for domestic helpers to prepare them for work abroad. It is located on Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City.  At the center, Filipinos are trained to properly clean, cook, use the washing machine (always separate whites from colors), and perform other tasks that domestic helpers are expected to do by their prospective foreign employers.

With more than 96,000 women leaving the Philippines each year to work abroad as maids, domestic helpers are the second largest overseas Filipino workforce behind merchant seamen, according to government statistics. The top 10 destinations for Filipina maids are Hong Kong, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Singapore, Bahrain, Oman, Cyprus, and Italy.

Now, back to the reality show.

It is patterned after a similar show on GMA-7 called ‘Pinay Beauty Queen Academy’ where beauty queen aspirants are selected to compete for the top spot with the guidance of professional mentors, all of them previous beauty title holders.  Contestants are eliminated one by one until the last woman standing.

“Housemaids Academy” will also involve an elimination (voting out) process, and the last contestant remaining will be declared the winner, bagging a contract plus free round-trip airfare to the country of her new employment.

Watch out for ABS-CBN’s casting all announcement.  In the meantime, brush up on your domestic skills.

News Site Strips Miss Globe Of Her Crown

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – First, Steve Harvey stripped Miss Colombia of the Miss Universe crown.  Now a news site, NewsBeatPHL, has stripped Ann Lorraine Maniego Colis from the Philippines of her Miss Globe title.

In a video report, NewsBeatPHL said that while the Philippines has won 5 international beauty titles so far this year, one of the winners, Colis, was stripped of her crown days after winning the pageant.  The news site didn’t give any reason for the de-crowning.

Then, some smart, fact-checking netizens realized that NewsBeatPHL based its report on an article published by The Adobo Chronicles.

That would be us.

If it’s in The Adobo Chronicles, it must be true!

In fairness, NewsBeat corrected their news report in a revised video:

BEAUTY PAGEANT BAN FOR PHILIPPINES IS PERMANENTLY LIFTED

photoQuezon City, Philippines – Last November, The Adobo Chronicles reported that the Philippines has been banned from participating in international beauty pageants for the next two years.  The decision to disqualify Filipina candidates from pageants like Miss Universe, Miss International, Miss World and Miss Supranational was made by the Association of Beauty Pageant Franchise Holders (ABPFH) because of the enormous advantage of Filipina beauties who have won the crown in all major beauty contests.

Just in time for the crowning of the 2014 Binibining Pilipinas (Miss Philippines) title holders, the ABPFH announced that it has permanently lifted the ban on Filipina beauties, thanks to the advocacy efforts of reigning Miss Universe Gabriela Isler of Venezuela.  Isler was one of the judges in the 2014  Miss Philippines pageant held last night at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Philippines.

Isler reportedly convinced the ABPFH that the ban was unfair and that she commiserates with the Philippines for having been banned from international beauty pageants.  Like the Philippines, Venezuela has also won the crown for all major beauty pageants, along with Brazil.

Reigning international beauty pageant title holders automatically become voting members of ABPFH.  Isler asked for a vote to permanently lift the ban on the Philippines, and majority voted in favor of Isler’s proposal.  Also voting in favor of lifting the ban were reigning Miss World Megan Young, Miss International Bea Rose Santiago,  Miss Supranational Mutya Johanna Datul  and Miss Tourism International Angeli Dione Gomez — Filipinas all.
