INDIA BANS SLAUGHTER OF COWS; PHILIPPINES CONSIDERS A BAN ON PIGS

IMG_6760MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Philippines Senator Nancy Binay is proposing a bill that would copy a newly-approved law in India which bans the slaughter of cows and the sale and consumption of beef in the western state of Maharashtra.

Hindus, who comprise 80% of India’s 1.2 Billion population, revere cows and the sale and consumption of beef is banned or restricted in many states.The state of  Maharashtra includes India’s commercial capital and biggest city, Mumbai.

Binay wants a similar law to apply to pigs in the Philippines.

The daughter of the Vice President says her bill will prevent future pork barrel scams which have plagued the country in the last two years. The scams siphoned  some Ten Billion pesos of taxpayer money into fake projects and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) for the personal gain of some business people and politicians.

Several senators and high-ranking government officials are now in jail facing charges of corruption in connection with the pork barrel scandal.

“Kung bawal na ang kumatay ng baboy, eh di wala nang pork barrel,” Binay said. (If the slaughter of pigs is banned, then there will be no more pork barrel)

(The Adobo Chronicles) – According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 32,719 people died in traffic crashes in 2013 in the United States (latest figures available), including an estimated 10,076 people who died in drunk driving crashes, accounting for 31% of all traffic deaths that year.

One person is killed by a drunk driver every 39 minutes.

Meanwhile, it is estimated that 45,000 Americans die each year because of the lack of health insurance. Yet, the Republican  Party is unrelentless in its resolve to strike down the Affordable Care Act, a.k.a. Obamacare.

So, in its commitment to significantly reduce American deaths caused by drunk driving and the lack of affordable care, the National Democratic Committee, in partnership with the NHTSA and the American Medical Association, launched a comprehensive and ambitious campaign to create greater public awareness about these unnecessary deaths.

The group has just unveiled the first of a series of billboards, posters and bus signs that remind the American people not to drink and drive and not to vote Republican. (See photo of traffic sign above).

WASHINGTON, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles) – Contrary to speculation that the Republican Party has no clear frontrunner in the nomination for president in the 2016 elections, the Grand Old Party (GOP) today unveiled its list of ‘presidentiables,’ any one of whom could be the next president of the United States.

“It’s a crowded field, but they are all frontrunners and equally qualified to be president,” said Reince Priebus, Chairman of the Republican National Committee.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party continues to maintain that it has only one clear frontrunner (lone-up) for the 2016 presidential nomination – Barack Obama, with Hillary Clinton a distant second, and Elizabeth Warren, a distant third.
