TIME Clarifies: Greta Thunberg As ‘Person Of The Year’ Is For Our Satire Edition

NEW YORK, New York (The Adobo Chronicles, New York Bureau) – Initial reaction to TIME Magazine’s choice of climate activist Greta Thunberg as this year’s ‘Person of the Year’ was hugely negative, with netizens expressing shock about it.

But today, the editors of TIME clarified that what it announced was the ‘Person of the Year’ for its satire edition. They said their real choice has not yet been made public. They said they couldn’t decide between U.S. President Donald Trump and Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

”We thought that starting this year, we’d come out with a holiday satire edition and what better way to do it than to create a mock ‘Person of the Year,’ the editors told The Adobo Chronicles.

Last year, TIME named Rappler CEO Maria Ressaa one of its ‘Persons of the Year,’ and we asked the editors if that was also meant to be satire. Their response: ‘No comment.’

U2’s Bono To Filipino Concert-goers: Don’t Pay Your Taxes

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – It is being reported on social media that Bono and U2 were booed by members of the audience during a concert held last weekend at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila.  The reason? Bono dedicated the song, “Ultra Violet” to Rappler CEO Maria Ressa and flashed her face on the giant screen.  He reportedly told the audience to “be like Maria Ressa.”

In effect, many have interpreted Bono’s comment to mean “Don’t pay you taxes!”

Ressa is facing criminal charges for tax evasion.

Ironically, Bono himself has been described as a “Tax Rogue,” for U2’s decision in 2006 to move their tax affairs from Ireland to the Netherlands, after the Irish government decided to cap the tax-free exemption on royalties at €225,000 (before this, artists in Ireland were not obliged to pay any tax on royalties).

Meanwhile, the Philippines’ Bureau of Internal Revenue is reportedly auditing the concert proceeds of the U2 Manila concert to make sure the band pays all taxes due.  BIR is also considring imposing a 10% tax surcharge to all who purchased tickets to the concert.  Ticket prices ranged from P2,499 to P20, 499.

Antonio Trillanes Calls Blogger Jover Laurio “Deceiver”

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau)  – Blood may be thicker than water, but being a godfather to someone’s wedding won’t prevent him from calling the goddaughter names — like deceiver.

Former Senator Antonio Trillanes, who was a “ninong” at Jover Laurio’s wedding has called the blogger (Pinoy Ako Blog) “manloloko.”

Trillanes was responding to a tweet by Laurio in which, in sarcasm, she congratulated the organizers of the 2019 South East Asian Games for winning an award as the “Best SEA Games Organizer,” allegedly given by the Sports industry Awards Asia (SPIA).

It turns out no such award was given.

Trillanes couldn’t hold back on his criticism of Laurio.  The two are closely identified with the political opposition — the Dilawan.
