MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is being called out for his remarks at a speech in India,  supposedly promising visitors and investors  42 virgins.

The remarks were in obvious reference to a belief that has been floated that martyrs will be rewarded with virgins in Paradise.

But the criticism is much ado about nothing.

Duterte didn’t even get the number right. It’s 72, not 42 virgins.

Where did the 30 go?

Pope Francis Chides Rappler, Other Mainstream News Media

779E0CA2-6DEA-4971-844E-BC804576B21D.jpegMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau)  – Rappler is reporting that Pope Francis has described journalists as “protectors of news.”

The Pope’s message was made in connection with World Communications Day.

But now it turns out that the message was “lost in translation.”

Francis made the comment in Spanish and the Rappler reporter misinterpreted it.

Sources close to the Vatican said that what the Pope actually said was that journalists were “purveyors of fake news” (noticias falsas).

The pontiff then pushed for journalism “that is truthful and opposed to all falsehoods, rhetorical slogans, and sensational headlines.” He specifically mentioned Rappler, Inquirer and The New York Times.

The Pope also apparently praised bloggers and individuals citizens who have Facebook and Twitter accounts, describing their work as “a journalism created by people for people, one that is at the service of all, especially those – and they are the majority in our world – who have no voice.”

The Catholic Church — despite the festival’s commercialization for decades now — maintains that Ati-Atihan remains, and should remain, a religious festival.

And so, when a Mr. and Miss Bikini Open was held in conjunction with the festivities, Fr. Joesel Quan cried ‘foul.’ He bemoaned the attire of the contestants.

However, a young altar boy close to Fr. Quan, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The Adobo Chronicles that the real reason the priest was concerned and disappointed was because the chosen bikini attires of the contestants were not ‘revealing enough.’

”Father was so looking forward to the event, and even volunteered to be a judge.  But when all was said and done, he was not happy and instead publicly complained about the impropriety of the extra-curricular event.
