CONGRESS OF THE PHILIPPINES: WHAT’S ON THE MENU

gen8bManila, Philippines – Freedom of Information, Death Penalty, Anti-Political Dynasty, Reproductive Health — these are issues too overwhelming for members of the Senate and House of Representatives in the Republic of the Philippines.  Theses issues are so controversial that passage of corresponding bills have become almost impossible. And the Philippine Congress is worried about its emerging reputation as a “Do-Nothing Congress.”

So, in their respective current sessions, both houses are busy drafting and hearing numerous bills that would easily gain bi-partisan support, among them:

  • House Bill 3926 to make adobo national dish of the Philippines, authored by Representative Rene Relampagos of the province of Bohol.
  • Senate Bill 1863 seeking to impose fines on establishments that refuse to serve half-cup rice orders, authored by Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr.
  • House Bill 3979 to require bottled water to be included in the menu of restaurants and fast food chains, authored by Representative Lorna Velasco (Partylist, AMA).

Marcos’ bill aims to prevent unnecessary waste in the country’s main staple and to ensure enough rice supply even in times of calamity.  Velasco’s bill seeks to replace sodas and sweet drinks which are responsible for obesity, diabetes and other health issues faced by Filipinos.

In addition to these measures, the bi-partisan committee on ways and means has proposed two resolutions pertaining to the Congress itself:

  • Resolution to change the official name of the Congress of the Philippines to “Restaurant Congress of the Philippines” to better reflect its legislative priorities.
  • Resolution to rename bills to “menu.”  So, henceforth, the above bills will be known as House Menu 3926 and 3979, and Senate Menu 1863.

POPE FRANCIS SCOLDS PRESIDENT OBAMA

President Obama and Pope Francis
President Obama and Pope Francis

Vatican City – President Barack Obama met for the first time with Pope Francis on Thursday, sitting across from the pontiff at a simple desk in the papal library for a discussion that explored their philosophical common ground and their differences. After the meeting, Obama described his discussion with the pope as “wide-ranging” and focused mainly on two issues: how to help the poor and marginalized, and how to confront conflicts.

What the media reports are not saying was the fact that Pope Francis scolded Obama for the latter’s treatment of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. The Pope assailed Obama’s record in as far as the deportation of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. is concerned. The Obama administration has deported 2 Million undocumented immigrants, more than any American president.  Immigration advocates have repeatedly called on  Obama to stop deportations by executive order, but the President has said it would be difficult to act without Congress.

Pope Francis, wagging his finger at Obama, said that Jesus Christ had nothing but love and compassion towards sinners, the poor, the homeless, prostitutes, tax collectors and even criminals.  “I don’t understand why you have allowed the undocumented immigrants to be separated from their families,” Pope Francis told Obama. The pope added:  ” You yourself have adopted two dogs and provided them a comfortable and privileged life at your White House.  Why can’t you do the same for these unfortunate human beings?”

Sources close to Obama said that the President merely smiled at the Pontiff without saying a word.

Washington, D.C. – The Adobo Chronicles chanced upon Representative Michele Bachmann (R-MN) just outside the Supreme Court today. Wearing a fur coat with a hood, she stood under the snow shower side by side with protesters who were in support of the Hobby Lobby contraception case being heard by the Supremes.

Observers have noticed that in rcecent days, Bachmann has been appearing on television and social media, advocating for a “return to the days of our founding fathers, when America was God’s favorite country.”

Bachmann told The Adobo Chronicles that the many problems facing America today are a result of too much  emphasis on women’s rights, gay rights and immigrant rights. “Our founding fathers were so much into Jesus that America was truly blessed,” she said.

It appears that Bachmann has been trying to be more visible after many months of hiatus. This, according to reliable sources, is in preparation for next week’s big announcement that Bachmann has been chosen by the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas, to succeed its late founder and pastor Fred Phelps.

Bachman refused to confirm or deny her impending promotion, merely saying to reporters: “God bless you and God bless America.”
