China Visit: Philippine President Duterte Plans To Trade Manila’s Chinatown For Scarborough Shoal

Manila’s Chinatown

BEIJING, China (The Adobo Chronicles, Hong Kong Bureau) – Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte begins a three-day official visit to Beijing Tuesday, armed with a solid proposal to resolve once and for all the territorial dispute between his country and China over Scarborough Shoal in the West Philippine Sea, a.k.a. South China Sea.

Malacañang told The Adobo Chronicles that Duterte will propose to the Chinese government a deal in which China will give up its claim over Scarborough Shoal in exchange for the Philippines relinquishing ownership of the entire area on which Manila’s Chinatown now stands.

China is reportedly very interested in having full jurisdiction over the world’s oldest Chinatown.

The Chinese government plans to convert Manila’s Chinatown into a Hong Kong style enclave and make it a world-famous shopping and tourist destination.

The Philippines, on the other hand, will have full ownership of Scarborough Shoal, including all the benefits that will be derived from its oil-rich resources.

U.S. Secretary of State was reported to be scratching his head over this shocking news from Beijing.

Asian Americans Protest New TV Series Featuring Daniel Dae Kim As Lead

HOLLYWOOD, California (The Adobo Chronicles, Los Angeles Bureau) – When NBC announced a few weeks ago that it has picked up a new sitcom about an American widower who takes in a mail-order bride from the Philippines to help raise his daughters, the Asian American community protested.  The rest is history, as NBC had cancelled the show.

Now, CBS is developing a new legal drama that centers around a Korean American lawyer.

“Exhibit A” is the newest series project of Alexi Hawley (Castle co-showrunner), Daniel Dae Kim (Hawaii Five-o co-star), and Ben Silverman (Jane The Virgin producer). The series, written by Hawley, is adapted from the South Korean drama hit “My Lawyer, Mr. Jo,” and will feature a Korean-American lawyer as the lead. The premise of the show follows the journey of the Korean-American prosecutor from disgrace to redemption as he works with an idealistic attorney to fight for the underdogs of Los Angeles.

Korean American Daniel Dae Kim will play the lead role, certainly a first in U.S. television history (outside of action drama).

Immediately after the CBS announcement, Asian American community leaders across the U.S. protested and demanded that the network kill the show.

“It’s non-stereotypical and very offensive to the Asian American community,” said one Asian American community leader who requested anonymnity.  “Why can’t they come up with a more realistic show that would feature a Korean American owner of a dry cleaning shop or grocery store,” he asked.

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

Will The Real Miss Philippines Please Step Forward?

img_6379MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – In every competition, there are hometown decisions, and then there are hometown decisions. Two for one, so to speak.

When the 2016 Miss Earth beauty pageant unravels in Manila on October 29, there will be two Filipinas who will be competing for the crown: Miss Philippines and Miss Sweden.

Miss Philippines is Imelda Schweighart who happens to be part German.  Then there’s Filipina Cloie Skarne, Miss Sweden.

Cloie is Filipino by blood and strongly resembles singer-actress KC Concepcion who is her half sister.

Cloie is the daughter of actor Gabby Concepcion by Jenny Syquia but has taken on the last name of her Swedish adoptive father; while KC is Concepcion’s daughter by Sharon Cuneta.

The other contestants are already crying “foul” because they feel that the Philippines has two representatives to the pageant.  “That doubles the chances that the next Miss Earth will be Filipina,” they claimed.

The reigning Miss Earth is also Filipina, Angelia Ong.
