Filipino Americans To Picket Bon Appétit Magazine’s New York Headquarters

IMG_6719.PNGNEW YORK, New York (The Adobo Chronicles, Washington Bureau) – Bon Appétit is an American food and entertaining magazine published monthly. It is headquartered in New York City.

Today, a coalition of Filipino American organizations throughout the country announced that it will stage a week-long picket in front of the magazine’s New York office.

At issue? The Filipino halo-halo, a unique and traditional snack akin to the Hawaiian shave ice.

In a recent article, “Ode to Halo-Halo,” the magazine re-invented the Filipino sweet delicacy by substituting its ingredients with gummy bears.

That didn’t sit well with the Pinoys (slang for Filipino), so they are staging a protest to demand that Bon Appétit recall all copies of the issue where the gummy bear halo-halo was featured.

Don’t mess with the Filipinos. Especially with their halo-halo!

Inquirer, FilAm Lawyer Apologize To Philippine President Duterte

img_6385SAN FRANCISCO, California (The Adobo Chronicles, San Francisco Bureau) – The Inquirer, a leading Philippine daily newspaper, and Ted Laguatan, a self-confessed long-time San Francisco-based Filipino American lawyer, have issed a joint and very heart-felt apology to President Rodrigo Duterte today.

Yesterday, the Inquirer published a scathing op-ed piece by Laguatan in which he urged the world’s good and decent people like himself to force Duterte to resign. The good lawyer invoked Jesus Christ in hoping that the popular president amend “his evil ways” and  “save his soul.”

The problem? Laguatan named the wrong president, whoever that “Rodolfo Duterte” was. And it seemed that the Inquirer didn’t know any better by publishing the article.

Perhaps the newspaper couldn’t afford to pay a copyeditor? Or did the editors think Laguatan’s lengthy piece was satire?

Inquirer has since corrected the misnomer, but thanks to the power of the Internet Laguatan’s laughable piece and the Inquirer’s complicity in attacking Duterte will go down  in history as the greatest infamy in Philippine politics.

(The letter of apology hasn’t been published yet as it is undergoing some intensive copyediting and proofreading at the Inquirer.)

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – What do blogger Mocha Uson and Senator Leila De Lima have in common?  Sex, lies and videotape.

The outspoken senator has been facing accusations about her alleged involvement in the illegal drug trade inside the New Bilibid Prison while being constantly subjected to rumors about her sexual escapades with her personal driver and even with some jail inmates.  There are alleged sex videos pointing to the lady senator.

Uson, on the other hand has been accused of being a paid spokesperson for President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and has been the subject of attacks by critics and the jealous media like Rappler for her popular political blog.

Now, the enemies of Uson are spreading “Throwback Thursday” photos of the former singer, dancer and nude model.

“Inuungkat yung nakaraan ko. Pinapakita yung mga hubad kong larawan na lumabas po sa mga magazine,” Uson said in an interview on Friday. (They’re digging into my past. They’re showing my nude photographs that have appeared in magazines.)

While she maintains that she’s unaffected by the bashing she receives in social media, Uson wants netizens to stop making personal attacks against her.

De Lima has demanded the same.

Now it remains to be seen whether women and human rights groups will come to the defense of Uson like they did for De Lima in condemning slut-shaming which we all agree has no place in a decent society like ours.
