MAN SUSPECTED OF CARJACKING A HEARSE PLEADS GUILTY TO A LESSER CHARGE: CASKET THEFT

imageLos Angeles, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – A man allegedly stole a hearse that contained a casket during a funeral in South Park Saturday morning, according to Los Angeles Police Department officials.

The hearse was stolen from the Ebenezer Baptist Church, located at 4901 Avalon Blvd. in South L.A., pictured, on Dec. 27, 2014.

Witnesses said an older man climbed into the unoccupied hearse and drove off. The vehicle’s motor was running before he entered it. Funeral attendees then followed the hearse, managed to get the man to pull over, and eventually recovered the funeral car and casket. The car thief was apprehended by L.A. police.

Appearing before a judge on Monday, the carjacking suspect pleaded not guilty to auto theft, saying it was never his intention to steal the funeral car.

He, however, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge: stealing a casket.

Because the casket contained a human body at the time of the theft, prosecutors are preparing a new charge: kidnapping.

SURVEY: WHERE MILLENNIALS GET THEIR NEWS

Silicon Valley (The Adobo Chronicles) – Where do Millennials — those who achieved adulthood beginning in the year 2000 — get their news?

The results of a nationwide survey of American Millennials conducted by the Bookings Institute may surprise you.

While the poll came back with some facts most people already knew, a few findings may be hard to believe.

As  for social media, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram remain the top venues where Millennials hang out. No surprises there.

However, the survey revealed these shocking trends which could have a great impact on the informed citizenry of the future:

  • Millennials don’t tune in to real news like The Colbert Report or The Daily Show.
  • They don’t tune in to fake news shows like FOX News either.
  • They are confused as to whether CNN is a real or fake news source.
  • 98% of Millennials have never heard of LinkedIn.
  • More than 65% of respondents think that The Washington Post is run by the U.S. Postal Service.
  • Majority  believe that The New York Times is the same as Playbill, the program pamphlet distributed at all Broadway shows.
  • Majority think that Public broadcasts should be free and accessible to all Americans, especially Millennials; so Netflix should be free.
  • 80% believe that Comcast is the same as Chromecast, so cable subscription should only cost a one-time fee of $35.

CNN TO MERGE WITH SWN SATIRE SITE IN THE PHILIPPINES

imageManila, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – First came the news that 9TV will become CNN Philippines in early 2015. Now, the international cable news network is reportedly in negotiations to acquire SWN (So What’s News?), a Filipino news satire site.

An unmaned CNN spokesperson told reporters that CNN is continuously looking to expand its operations around the world and is constantly searching for existing news media outlets to acquire or partner with.

“SWN’s mission statement is very consistent with what CNN is trying to accomplish in its international news operations,” the spokesperson said, adding that “like SWN, we are committed to bring positive, accurate, entertaining and timely news to our millions of customers. And just like SWN, we love to report on fiction.”

On its web site, SWN describes its product as “news that won’t make you depressed to read the news.” Critics who oppose the CNN-SWN merger pointed out that CNN’s reporting is known to make people very depressed,  “so a merger with SWN is not a wise move at all.”

SWN refused to comment because negotiations are still ongoing.
