Ex-Comelec Chair Andy Bautista Seeking Professional Opportunities In San Francisco

07E85C9C-6872-4965-8E9A-38B142E61045SAN FRANCISCO, California (The Adobo Chronicles, San Francisco Bureau) – The Philippine Senate has ordered the arrest of former Commission on Elections (Comelec) chair Andres “Andy” Bautista after he repeatedly failed to attend the Senate probe into his alleged unexplained wealth. However, the warrant could not be served because Bautista is out of the country.

Reports say that Bautista has been out of the country since November 21 last year to “explore professional opportunities” and “seek assistance for certain medical challenge” he was facing.

Bautista’s wife, Patricia, has been accusing him of allegedly amassing nearly P1-billion worth of unexplained wealth, and of owning more than 30 bank accounts with the Luzon Development Bank’s (LDB) amounting to P329 million.

Our investigative reporters have confirmed that Bautista is in San Francisco seeking professional opportunities. He has applied for a position as Executive Director of the Folsom Street Fair.

Folsom Street Fair (FSF) is an annual BDSM and leather subculture street fair held in September, that caps San Francisco’s “Leather Pride Week”. Sometimes simply referred to as “Folsom”, it takes place on Folsom Street between 8th and 13th Streets, in San Francisco’s South of Market district.

We wish Bautista the best of luck. It would be a great pride among Filipino Americans to have a Pinoy head the world’s largest leather event.

Senate Approves New Impeachment Robe

8C28925D-2A9A-4BD9-AC6D-70A5A03C06CBMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – ‘Ayaw naming magmukhang mga rebulto ng santo’ (We don’t want to look like statues of saints).

With that statement, the Philippine Senate approved a new design of the robe they put on when acting as an impeachment court.

The design, proposed by Senators Risa Hontiveros and Bam Aquino, mimics that of the robe used by Canada’s Supreme Court.

The new red and white design is closer to a Santa Claus robe without the hat. It replaces the maroon velvet robe that is commonly seen draping statues of Jesus Christ and saints at Catholic churches.

”We can’t wait to debut the new robe at the Impeachment trial of Chief Justice Lourdes Sereno,” Hontiveros and Aquino told The Adobo Chronicles.

Rappler’s Bumpy Road To Bankruptcy

CE72D92A-F497-45C8-8B34-EAC754D98F1E.jpegMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – It is just a matter of time.  The once successful and viable online news source established by Maria Ressa seems headed for bankruptcy.

It all started with the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) order canceling the media license of Rappler for violation of the Philippine Constitution’s provision banning foreign ownership of media companies.  The order is on appeal.

Then, in order to cope with declining ad revenue and the cost of maintaining its core of Rapplerettes, Ressa launched an online fundraising campaign many months ago.  She failed to raise the P5 Million goal and had to extend the campaign.  To date, a little less than 50% of the goal has been raised.

Now, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has slapped Rappler with a P133.8 Million tax evasion case.  Ressa calls it “ludicrous.”

So, let’s do the math, assuming that Rappler has another source of income to pay its reporters and employees as well as its office rent, not to mention daily operating expenses.

Rappler’s foreign investor, Omidyar Network, has donated its P78 Million investment to the senior managers of Ressa’s company. Let’s assume for a moment that all the managers will donate back their share of the Omidyar donation to Rappler.

Now, let’s add the P2.5 Million Rappler has raised so far via its online fundraising campaign.

That gives Rappler a total of P80.5 Million to play with. But that’s obviously not enough to fulfill its tax obligations with the BIR.  In fact, Rappler would end up more than P53 Million in the red.

Is bankruptcy in the very near horizon for Rappler?

Just asking.
