MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – World leaders will gather in Manila this week for the annual Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, and the Philippines is putting its best foot forward to make the meeting a huge and memorable success — for the visitors.

Meanwhile, Filipinos have been asked by their goverment to make ‘small’ sacrifices:

  1. Postpone or cancel travel plans because international and domestic commercial flights into and out of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) have  been cancelled to make way for arriving and departing APEC dignitaries and delegates.
  2. Give up a week’s worth of wages and/or productivity due to the closure of private and public offices.
  3. Give up a week’s worth of new knowledge because of the closure of schools.
  4. Expect interruption of Internet connectivity because the cyberspace has been reserved for exclusive APEC use only.
  5. Give up two lanes of busy roadways (see photo) to ensure that APEC delegates will not be late for their meetings and cocktail receptions.
  6. For residents of high-rise condominiums along or near the APEC meeting venues: keep their curtains closed at all times and avoid hanging out in their balconies — for security reasons.
  7. For the homeless population: give up a week’s worth of panhandling earnings because they will be rounded up and hidden from public view.
  8. There will be shortened hours for shopping at all Metro Manila malls and mega malls.
  9. Postpone or cancel all romantic dates along the famed Manila Bay and Roxas Boulevard, site of the APEC meetings — again for security reasons.
  10. Last but not the least, there will be no episode of AlDub, the street series of the popular noontime TV Show, ‘Eat Bulaga’ on GMA Channel 7.

It might as well be ‘Holy Week’ for all Filipino catholics!

On the positive side, there will be no cases of laglag bala at NAIA all week!

WAS THERE A BULLET IN PRESIDENT AQUINO’S POCKET?

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – An official photograph of Philippine President NoyNoy Aquino shaking hands with Chinese President Xi Jinping has caused a stir in the international diplomatic community.

The photo, taken during a courtesy visit by the Chinese leader to the presidential palace in Manila, shows Aquino with his left hand inside his trousers’ pocket.

Many have even speculated that Aquino was holding on to a bullet — an obvious reference to the laglag bala scheme at the Ninoy Aquino Intrrnational Airport which has dominated the news of late. The scheme involves the ‘planting’ of bullets in bags of unsuspecting airline passengers allegedly by airport personnel for the purpose of extorting money.

The president’s staff have categorically denied the rumors.

Philippine veteran actor extraordinaire Bernardo Bernardo told The Adobo Chronicles he didn’t think there was any bullet inside Aquino’s pocket.  Bernardo was more concerned about the fact that Aquino’s barong tagalog seemed to be crumpled.

Perhaps, Aquino’s housekeeper had the day off?

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Tradition dictates that the spouse of the head of the host-state tour the spouses of guest-leaders during Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) events, but with President Aquino being a bachelor, his sisters had to fill in.

Ambassador Marciano Paynor Jr., director general of the APEC National Organizing Council, earlier told reporters that the president’s  sisters Ballsy Aquino-Cruz, Pinky Aquino-Abelleda, Viel Aquino-Dee and Kris Aquino will be giving the spouses of APEC leaders a historical tour of Intramuros during the Nov. 18-19 event.

Jardin said the tour, with the theme “A Walk Through Time,” would recreate a “living museum” scenario at every stop featuring actors, dancers and musicians.

However, at the last minute, Kris, an actress and talk show host, asked that she be excused from the spouses’ tour.

She asked her president brother to assign her instead  to be the personal chaperone of two of the most good-looking heads of state attending the Manila summit: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto.

Kris told The Adobo Chronicles that she is ‘very kilig’ (flirtatiously excited) just thinking about it. “Both gentlemen are so pogi (handsome), and it will be an honor and an extreme pleasure for me to be their tourist guide! I also want to do a one-on-one interview with them for my TV show.”

Kris’ three sisters are understandably not happy.
