MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – For quite some time, ‘My Way’ was the most popular sing-along music played at karaoke bars in the Philippines.  Alas, it was also the deadliest song, with karaoke singers reportedly killed just for singing the Frank Sinatra classic.

But move over, ‘My Way,’ here comes the new most requested and sung karaoke song, and it still has to do with “killing.”

That’s right, ‘Killing Me Softly,’ popularized by Roberta Flack, is now No.1 on the karaoke charts, thanks to Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and his nemesis, Senator Leila De Lima.

Duterte has mentioned the song in reference to his claim that “he has the goods” on De Lima in as far as the senator’s link to the proliferation of illegal drugs at the National Bilibid Prison during her time as Secretary of Justice under the Aquino administration.

De Lima herself has mentioned the song in her press conference and interviews refuting Duterte’s claims.

In the meantime, while Duterte and De Lima battle it out in Malacañang, the Senate and the media, Karaoke enthusiasts are having a grand time belting out this 1973 Grammy Record of the Year.

Let’s just hope nobody gets killed doing it.

Balut

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Filipinos both in the Philippines and in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are not happy about reports that balut, the popular boiled fertilized duck egg, is being banned upon entry into Dubai.

The Philippine Consulate in Dubai has warned arriving Filipinos in the UAE to refrain from bringing balut not only because it will be confiscated but could also delay  the immigration process at the airport.

Reacting to the news, a national coalition of Philippine relatives of UAE Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) has scheduled a “people power” protest this weekend to be held at Rizal Park (Luneta).  The group expects a million people to participate in the protest.

A spokesperson for the coalition told The Adobo Chronicles that the UAE should “leave our balut alone.” It is the greatest source of Filipino pride and sustenance.  It warned that OFWs in Dubai will stage a city-wide strike if the ban continues.

“What will the UAE ban next? Tuyo and danggit ?”  (salted dried fish) the spokesperson asked.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (The Adobo Chronicles, San Francisco Bureau) – Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is a step ahead of his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

While Clinton is busy putting together her transition team in preparation for her impending move into The White House, Trump is already naming members of his cabinet. His first appointee? Former Minnesota Representative Michele Bachmann.

Trump named the Tea Party darling his Secretary of State.

Bachmann has confirmed the appointment telling reporters that Trump has his ear on foreign policy.

In a Minnesota fundraiser for Trump on Saturday, Bachmann revealed that  she is advising the Republican candidate on foreign policy.

The news came as huge disappointment for former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin who had desperately wanted the State Secretary job.  Among Palin’s foreign policy expertise is the fact that she can see Russia from her backyard.
