QUEZON CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – In an effort to recover from the embarassment resulting from the rejection by President Rodrigo Duterte of an Honorary Degree from the University of the Philippines, the Board of Regents today announced a substitute honoree for its 2017 Commencement Exercises.  And it’s another president — former President NoyNoy Aquino.

It’s also another honorary degree for Aquino from U.P. Previously, the University conferred upon Aquino an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws at its 100th General Commencement Exercises.

This year, following Duterte’s decision to decline the award and after protests from the smartest of students, faculty and alumni of U.P., the Board of Regents said that this time around, Aquino will be conferred an honorary degree of Doctor of Engineering.

In making the announcement, U.P. said that this new honorary degree for Aquino is in recognition of his very impressive engineering feat while president, especially in building straight roads (Daang Matuwid), defying Engineering technology that relied on curved and winding roads.

“No other human being has perfected the art of straight roads,” the Regents said. “It is an accomplishment that the entire world can emulate.  Aquino’s ingenuity is a source of great pride for the University and the Filipino people.”

King Duterte?

BAHRAIN, The Middle East (The Adobo Chronicles, on board Philippine Airlines) – There is a growing clamor among Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s supporters to grant him revolutionary powers in order to expedite the transition to a Federal and Parliamentary form of government.

So far, Duterte himself has given no specific indication that he indeed wants to have revolutionary powers. Now we know why, thanks to his Holy Week state visits to the Middle East.

In the past two days, Duterte has personally met with King Salman Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia and King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain. He is expected to meet with Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar today.

A mole in Duterte’s delegation told The Adobo Chronicles that the main purpose of the meetings with the monarchs was to seek their advice on what is needed to be a king 👑.

“I am a mere mayor of a city in the Philippines and I have no experience ruling an entire kingdom ” Duterte reportedly told the heads of state.

Is it time to practice saying ‘Hail to the King’ instead of ‘Mabuhay ang Pangulo?’

We reached out to Vice President Leni Robredo, Senate President Franklin Drilon, Chief Justice Lourdes Sereno and incarcerated Senator Leila De Lima for comment. None have returned  our texts.

Palit-Presidente Rally Organizers Release Aerial Photo To Show They Had Thousands Of Attendees

IMG_0370MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – While it has been reported that anywhere from 4,000 to 100,000 people attended the ‘Palit-Bise’ (change of Vice President) rally at Luneta last April 2, there has not been an aerial photo of the gathering of President Duterte’s supporters published in the news media.

In contrast, anti-Duterte supporters who recently staged a ‘Palit-Presidente’ (change of President) rally released an aerial photo of their protest to counter reports that there were only a little over a dozen attendees.

The Palit-Presidente released this photo on Palm Sunday. It does show a sea 🌊   of people brandishing the opposition’s familiar yellow color, reminding their supporters and others of the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem:
