WASHINGTON, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles, Washington Bureau) – Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has found an ally in the person of US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley.

Haley said the US is “reviewing its participation” in the Human Rights Council over what it considered the biased and unfair treatment of the Philippine leader and his war on drugs.

Haley specifically mentioned Special Rapporteur Agnes Callamard of the Office of the UN High Commission for Human Rights who was recently in the Manila under the guise of an “academic visit.”

Callamard has been critical of Duterte’s human rights record.

Earlier, the Filipino president officially invited the UN Rapporteur to conduct her investigation of the alleged human rights violations on the condition that the two will have a public debate before the media. Callamard has refused to accept the condition set by Duterte.

“We hold human rights of all people on a high pedestal,” Haley said, “but we do not condone any bullying tactics by the U.N. or Western countries of Third-World governments and leaders.  Our President, Donald Trump, holds Duterte in the highest esteem and we will stand by our long-time ally against any unfair treatment by the U.N.”

Asked by reporters about possible human rights violations by the U.S. with regards to Trump’s anti-Muslim and anti-immmigrant policy statements, Haley said, “No comment.”
