THE HAGUE, Netherlands (The Adobo Chronicles, Berlin Bureau) – The International Criminal Court (ICC) has gone into panic mode after Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said he will convince states to withdraw from the international body.

Earlier, Duterte announced the Philippines was withdrawing from the ICC.

“I will convince everybody now under the treaty: Get out! Bastos ‘yan (That is rude)! It is not a document that was prepared by anybody. It is an EU-sponsored [treaty],” Duterte said in a speech on Sunday before graduates of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) in Baguio City.

ICC officials interrupted their weekend personal plans and reported for work, trying to make phone calls to heads of state of ICC members in an apparent move to discourage countries from following Duterte’s lead in withdrawing from the international court.

In Washington, D.C., President Donald Trump was asked by reporters about Duterte’s call for states to withdraw from ICC.  Trump simply said, “ICC got what it deserved.”

The U.S. is not a signatory to the Rome Statute creating the ICC.

CJ Lourdes Sereno, Rappler’s Maria Ressa to St. Scholastica Nun: Shut Up!

This is exactly what happened to activist nun and former president of St. Scholastica’s College Sister Mary John Mananzan.

In an interview on GMA News, she criticized the Duterte government for trying to silence the opposition by citing the cases of Chief Justice Lourdes Sereno, Senator Leila De Lima and Rappler CEO Maria Ressa.

“Tignan mo ang nangyayari sa opposition, si Sereno, si Leila De Lima, at Rappler … basta nag-object ka, nagprotest ka, naganyan ka … anong klaseng democracy ‘yan, hindi ba democracy means you have to have opposition? Kung hindi ka ganyan, hindi ka democracy.”

While De Lima was pleased at Mananzan’s comment, Sereno and Ressa both condemned the nun.

”As Chief Justice, I am supposed to be non-partisan,” Sereno said.

”As a journalist and news media executive, I am neither anti nor pro-opposition,” Ressa said.

Both then asked Mananzan to just STFU (shut up).

Senate Committee Concludes Hearings, Declares Inquirer And Rappler As Fake News

013A7B16-65C4-4CC5-8C65-CA50651391FD.jpegMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – After three emotion-filled hearings, the Senate committee investigating the proliferation of fake news on the Internet concluded its proceedings today by declaring the Philippine Daily Inquirer and Rappler as sources of fake news.

Committee Chair Senator Grace Poe announced that she and her colleagues have come to this conclusion after resource persons invited to testify at the hearings presented uncontestable evidence to prove that the two news sources are perfect examples of fake news.

Among the evidence provided to the Senate committee included Inquirer’s ‘killing’ of Indonesian death row inmate, Filipina Mary Jane Veloso who was convicted of drug charges.  Inquirer reported that she was executed, but Veloso remains alive to this day.

Also presented was Rappler’s Pia Ranada’s report that President Duterte had appointed Nikki Prieto-Teodoro as the new DSWD Secretary to replace Judy Taguiwalo whose appointment was rejected by Congress.

In her concluding statement, Poe thanked the resource persons for their truthfulness and courage in helping the committee get to the bottom of fake news on social and mainstream media.

All’s well that ends well.
