Filipinos And Their “Six Degrees Of Separation”

Olympic gold medalist Joseph Schooling, right, and his Filipino nanny, Auntie Yolly

The Philippines may not win a gold medal in the Rio Olympics, but who cares, we’re related to someone who has — Singapore’s Joseph Schooling. That is, by virtue of his Filipino nanny, Yolanda Pascual or Auntie Yolly.

But it is not only in sports that we excel.

A good number of winners of reality TV shows like “American Idol,” and “America’s Got Talent” and their international franchises are part Filipino.

The very first Miss Universe was married to a Filipino while some contestants to the popular annual beauty pageant who represent other countries have blood ties to our in-laws, parents, grandparents and great great grandparents.

Bruno Mars is American, but hey, his mother is Filipino, so he must be one. And despite her very foreign-sounding surname, Nicole Scherzinger is definitely one of us! And did we already mention Apl.de.ap of Black Eyed Peas?

The White House executive chef, Cristeta Comerford, is Filipino and so is Navy Rear Admiral Raquel  C. Bono, the highest-ranking FilAm naval officer in the U.S.

Even celebrated serial killer Andrew Cunanan who murdered fashion designer Gianni Versace is of Filipino heritage.

So, what is our point? Nothing really, except to say that Filipinos are everywhere and that somehow, somewhere, we’re related to someone famous, or infamous.  Maybe, we’re even related to Kevin Bacon!

So unite, Filipinos! Who knows, you might be related to the Marcoses, or the Aquinos. Or the Dutertes for that matter.

In Rio, Athletes Compete To Be Top, In Sao Paolo, The Race Is To Be Bottom (Parental Guidance)

image.jpegRIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (The Adobo Chronicles, Sao Paolo Bureau) – The fierce competition among the athletes at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio is focused on the gold medal, to be the top.  In Sao Paolo, Brazil’s largest city, the contest is to be bottom.

Twenty-seven women competing to win the title of best bottom in Brazil got into the Olympic spirit yesterday by running in their own 100-metre sprint – in nothing but skimpy bikinis. They ran down the famous Avenida Paulista, Sao Paolo’s main street.

The women are all hopefuls for the title of Miss Bumbum, Brazil’s most popular beauty pageant for those “left behind.”

While the parade of beauties delighted thousands upon thousands of spectators, one particular lady who was recently spotted watching the women’s gymnastics in Rio, was not a happy camper.

You guessed it right. Kim Kardashian!

Philippines Bans China From Participating In The 2017 Miss Universe Pageant In Manila

image.jpegMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – The territorial dispute between China and several Asian countries over islands in the South China Sea has gone from the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague to the International Beauty Pageants.

It will be recalled that the court has recently ruled in favor of the Philippines over a case brought before it, challenging China’s claims over the disputed territories.

There are reports that China has banned the participation of the Philippines, along with Japan and Korea in the upcoming Miss Bikini Universe, an annual beauty pageant held in Shenzhen, south China’s Guangdong Province.  All indications point to the South China Sea territorial dispute as the reason for the ban.

In retaliation, the Philippines today announced that China will not be allowed to participate in the 2017 Miss Universe Pageant which will be hosted in Manila next January.

The Philippines was recently named as host of the Miss Universe Pageant, the third time  for the country.  Coincidentally, the Philippines has three Miss Universe title holders — Gloria Diaz, Margarita Moran and the reigning queen Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.
