MRT Mystery: Stations Are Packed But Trains Are Empty!

IMG_2213MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Metro 🚋 Manila’s Railway Transit System is no stranger to criticism, scandal and the constant ire of the commuting public, all because of long queues to reach the ticket booths and train platform, delays, technical problems and safety issues.

But the MRT management is puzzled by a phenomenon that appears to have begun on June 12, Independence Day.

There are still long queues and the stations along the entire stretch of EDSA are jampacked.  But each passing train is practically empty, and commuters are not fighting their way to get on board as is normally the case.

It took an investigative team from The Adobo Chronicles to help solve the mystery.  We interviewed hundreds of commuters at various MRT stations.

We finally found the answer MRT officials were looking for:

Starting last June 12, the government started offering free wi-fi service at the train stations along EDSA. Since then, commuters have been availing of the free service to check their social media accounts, send texts to their friends and family, and browse the Internet — all without using up their pre-paid data.

It’s a service that tech savvy Filipinos are quite thankful for, and for all good reason!

We were quoted and misquoted.  We were translated into different languages. We received fan mail and hate mail. We rattled the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Embassy in the Philippines.  We upset Hollywood. We even invented a new word: ‘ selfitis.’

Four years and we’re still having so much fun.

We hope you are, too, and if not, that’s perfectly fine as well.

Here’s to the next four!

BREAKING: Mang Inasal Food Chain Files For Bankruptcy!

IMG_2188

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Mang Inasal, the popular food chain that serves Filipino cuisine, including grilled chicken, pork and milkfish usually served with unlimited (UNLI) number of rice servings free of charge, is going bankrupt!

The restaurant chain which was acquired by Jollibee Foods Corporation for Three Billion pesos in 2010, is shutting down all its stores and franchises nationwide, thanks to Senator Cynthia Villar.

Villar recently proposed to ban the serving of UNLI rice at restaurants in the country as a way to attain rice self-sufficiency. She also proposed that Filipinos shift to brown, instead of white rice.

Being the socially-conscious and politically-correct company that it is, Mang Inasal started to serve unlimited kangkong (local spinach) in place of UNLI rice.

Alas, its customers dwindled and its sales dropped significantly, forcing the company to file for bankruptcy and to shut its doors for good.

Sometimes, our lawmakers think of the most stupid ideas to the detriment of our citizens and businesses.
