SM Baguio To Be Relocated As Part Of Government Plan To Rehabilitate City

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Baguio Bureau) –News media reports indicate that after the successful rehabilitation of Boracay and ongoing efforts in Palawan and other beach destinations, the government is now setting its sights on the highlands, in the country’s so-called Summer Capital, Baguio City.

The city government led by Mayor Benjamin Magalong has prohibited the cutting of trees and ordered a stop to all new construction of homes and office buildings as he sets out to turn Baguio into a “smart city,” according to Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat.

To revive the City of Pines, the city and national governments also plan to relocate structures, mostly private homes, that have been built along the slopes, to new developments being planned in the outskirts of the city and neighboring municipalities, Puyat said.

The Adobo Chronicles has learned that part of the grand scheme is to relocate the sprawling SM Baguio Mall built on top of Luneta Hill to a still undisclosed location far from the hustle and bustle of downtown Baguio.

”Come of think of it,” Magalong said, “the reason Baguio is experienceing this horrendous traffic is because practically all roads lead to SM.  Take out SM and you solve the traffic problem instantly,” he said.

In lieu of the shopping mall, the Department of Tourism will build what it is calling “Park on the Hill” which would would put to shame New York City’s Central Park.

It’s back to “The City of Pines” for Baguio!

Adobo Chronicles, Rappler Among World’s Top Satire News Sites

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – When it comes to the world’s top satirical news sites, the Philippines is well represented!

The leading Filipino-themed satirical news sites The Adobo Chronicles (AC) and Rappler both made it to the world’s top satires for 2019.

AC is in the 30th spot among the top 75, and Rappler is in the 76th spot.

Ironically, Rappler and its CEO Maria Ressa have long maintained that AC does not qualify as “satire,” while AC has always acknowledged that Rappler IS satire, bordering on “fake.”

Regardless, the inclusion of both sites is a huge honor for the country, considering the tough competition among news sites in the world today.

Mabuhay, AC and Rappler!

CBCP Orders Reading Of Robredo’s Drug War Exposé At First Day Of Simbang Gabi

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Christmas is in the air as the entire Catholic Filipino nation begins the traditional Simbang Gabi, the series of nine early dawn masses leading up to Christmas Day.

When the novena begins tomorrow, December 16, the faithful will hear first-hand, Leni Robredo’s explosive report on her findings while she was Drug Czar for 19 days.  The Vice President delayed her report in deference to the 2019 South East Asian Games which the Philippines hosted in the last two weeks.

The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has urged all parishes in the country to read the Robredo report in lieu of tomorrow’s homily.

It is not unusual for CBCB to ask churches to substitute homilies with pastoral letters it prepares on various social and political issues.

”We consider the drug war an issue that all devout Catholics should be concerned about and the Robredo report will tell all,” a CBCP spokesperson told The Adobo Chronicles.

Whether the report is really explosive as being hyped by the Office of the Vice President and members of the political Opposition remains to be seen. Otherwise,  Simbang Gabi-goers can use the few minutes during the homily to nap and recover some of the lost hours of sleep from rising early to attend the dawn mass.
