President Aquino Declares Leni Robredo ‘Persona Non Grata’

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – It was supposed to be a day of immense celebration as the Joint Session of the Senate and House of Representatives prepared to proclaim Rodrigo Duterte and Leni Robredo as the duly elected president and vice president of the Philippines in the May 9 elections.

But the occasion was marred by a very strong statement by President NoyNoy Aquino who declared Robredo as a ‘persona non grata.’

Congresswoman Robredo was the Liberal Party’s (LP) candidate for the office of the vice president. She ran in tandem with Aquino’s anointed successor Mar Roxas who lost the presidential contest to Davao City Mayor Duterte.

Aquino’s declaration resulted from Robredo’s attire during the proclamation proceedings. Instead of the trademark yellow color, the VP-elect wore a black and beige-colored dress. “It’s  in total disregard for the administration and the LP’s  symbol,” Aquino said.

The outgoing president was visibly upset at the sight of Robredo’s dress, saying it was ungrateful for the VP-elect to do wear it, especially after the Aquino administration and the Yellow Party spent so much time and resources to help the Congresswoman’s electoral campaign.

The ever-gracious Robredo, after hearing of Aquino’s statement, said she was sorry to have upset the president but noted that she is now the newly-elected VP of the country and not just of the Liberal Party.

Musical Chairs Between Marcos And Aquino Families

image.jpegHONOLULU, Hawaii (The Adobo Chronicles, Honolulu Bureau) – Two prominent Filipino families are constantly playing musical chairs, with a family  gaining the remaining seat one day,  only to be dislodged by the other the next.

We’re talking about the Marcos and Aquino families.

During the height of the Marcos dictatorship, the Aquinos were in exile in Boston, while the Marcoses were later deposed and forced to take up residence in Honolulu as a result of the famous EDSA People Power Revolution.

Since then both families continued to occupy influencial seats in government.

Cory Aquino became president. The Marcoses later returned and were elected to positions in the House of Representatives (Imelda Marcos), Ilocos Norte Governor’s Office (Imee Marcos) and the Senate (Bongbong Marcos).

When Cory died, son NoyNoy Aquino became president, and the game of musical chairs continued. (An Aquino, Bam, also currently sits as a senator)

As Noynoy prepared to leave office and his anointed successor lost in the elections, Bongbong failed to clinch the seat as vice president.

While the Marcoses continue to seek a return to Malacañang (the presidential palace), the Aquinos are rumored to be exploring Hawaii as a place of exile, possibly in the same Makiki Heights residence previously occupied by the Marcoses. Does this explain Kris Aquino’s recent trips to Honolulu?

It is no secret that NoyNoy could face criminal charges for illegally using public funds once he is no longer covered by presidential immunity, and Kris is reportedly very nervous that she could face charges for violation of the country’s election code (for using the presidential chopper in campaigning for the administration’s candidate Mar Roxas). So a life of exile is a logical way out, which is not so bad considering one in a place like paradise.

It remains to be seen which family will gain the remaining musical chair in this never-ending merry-go-round. But it seems it’s not up to either family, but rather to the Filipinos who keep voting them in.

Conservative Author Ann Coulter Receives Boxes And Boxes Of Rotten Mandarin Oranges

imageNEW YORK, New York (The Adobo Chronicles, Washington Bureau) – During a live television discussion on undocumented immigrants, conservative author Ann Coulter referred to Asian Americans as “Mandarin.”

Her fellow panelist on the Chris Matthews show corrected her and said they are called “Asian Americans,” but Coulter insisted it was the correct term and refused to be policed for her language.

Well, Coulter learned a lesson she will never forget.

When she returned to her home after the TV interview, she found boxes and boxes of rotten Mandarin oranges waiting for her at her doorstep, and more boxes are reportedly on the way.

She told The Adobo Chronicles, “I’m sure these oranges were sent in by Asian Americans upset by what I said on TV.”

See? Even old dogs can learn new tricks. “Asian Americans,” Ann, “Asian Americans.”
