Yet Another Scam At Manila’s International Airport: Laglag Piso

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila can never seem to escape the headlines.

Just months after the laglag bala (drop a bullet) scheme was uncovered, a new scam is all but brewing. (Laglag bala was a scheme in which unsuspecting airline passengers were questioned and detained after airport personnel supposedly found live bullets in their bags and luggage — all for the purpose of extorting money).

The new scam is called laglag piso (drop the peso) and it involves what appears to be a collusion between airport security and taxi operators.

Foreigners arriving at NAIA are offered a taxi ride to their hotel or destination and are handed a rate card that quotes the fixed fare in U.S. dollars, instead of Philippine pesos.  The dollar rates are not only illegal, but exhorbitant. What could be a fare of just a few hundred pesos can turn out to be thousands of pesos, in dollar equivalent.

When questioned about the newly-discovered scam, Manila International Airport Authority General Manager Joseph Angel Honrado said he has no control over the activities at the airport.  “My role is merely to coordinate.”

It’s exactly what he said when questioned in the Philippine Senate about the laglag bala scheme.

Traveling to Manila?  Drop the peso. Hang on to your U.S. dollar. It will go a long way. Away from your wallet, that is!

Miss Universe Defends The Adobo Chronicles From Critics

imageNEW YORK, New York (The Adobo Chronicles) – Reigning Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtabach of the Philippines came to the defense of The Adobo Chronicles, a leading Internet site of unbelievable news.

Many netizens have criticized the Chronicles for its reporting style, with some accusing the site of promulgating hoaxes and untruths.

Wurtzbach, who admits being an avid fan of the Chronicles, asked netizens, especially her kababayan (fellow Filipinos) to chill and enjoy the moment.

“As Miss Universe, I expect to be the subject of hoaxes, intrigues and gossip.  It comes with the territory.  I just shrug it off and have fun with it,” Wurtzbach said.

Wurtzbach’s answer to the final question before being crowned Miss Philippines-Universe says it all.  She was asked what she thought of Internet censorship, and she responded “Always think before you click.”

That’s why we love Miss Universe!  Thanks Pia!

Golden Globes: Hollywood Foreign Press Association Scolds Jennifer Lawrence

HOLLYWOOD, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – During a backstage press conference at last night’s Golden Globes, Jennifer Lawrence, who won Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy film, scolded a foreign journalist for looking at his phone while asking a question of the “Joy” star.

“You can’t live your whole life behind your phone, bro,” she said to a male journalist whose first language was apparently not English.  He was reading his question  — translated from his native language to English — from his smart phone.

After the press conference, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) scolded back Lawrence for being rude and insensitive, especially given the fact that her award came from a FOREIGN press association whose members consider English as a second, or third language.

“Apparently, Miss Lawrence thinks that if one can’t speak English, or has a foreign accent, he or she does not have any business asking her a question at a press conference in an awards show,” HFPA said.
