BREAKING: TORRE DE MANILA DECLARED A WORLD HERITAGE SITE

imagePARIS, France (The Adobo Chronicles® ) – The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) today honored the Philippines with another World Heritage Site designation, this time for Torre De Manila. The 46-storey condominium project at Luneta Park in Manila joins Vigan City, in Ilocos Sur in receiving this prestigious designation.

The announcement was made by UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova in ceremonies held at the Place de Fontenoy, the U.N. body’s headquarters in Paris.

UNESCO’s three-fold mission is to build intercultural understanding, pursue scientific cooperation, and protect freedom of expression. It created the idea of World Heritage to protect sites of outstanding universal value.

In her statement, Bokova said:

“Torre De Manila is the best example of urban planning, rising from the hallowed ground just steps away from the burial site of the Philippines’ national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.”

“It has withstood a persistent wave of nationalistic uprising while standing tall and firm amid bureaucratic obstacles and political favors. It is a symbol of the indomitable spirit of the Filipinos, and is a testament to the centuries-long divide between the haves and the have-nots.”

“Torre De Manila fuses the past with the future, ensuring that the next generation of Filipinos will draw inspiration from the heroism and courage of their heroes as well as the tactless perseverance and resiliency of those who built, or who allowed to build, this monumental heritage never before seen anywhere in ancient and modern times.”

Upon hearing the news , Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada declared a non-working holiday for the entire city to allow its citizens to fittingly celebrate this momentous occasion.

THE ADOBO TOUR PART 4: MADAM TUSSAUDS WAX MUSEUM WANTS TO REPLICATE MARCOS CRYPT

imageBATAC, Ilocos Norte (The Adobo Chronicles) – The Adobo Chronicles crew members were treated to a special private tour of the Ferdinand Marcos Presidential Center which houses the late president’s refrigerated crypt. The center is located in Marcos’ hometown of Batac, Ilocos Norte in the Philippines.

The visiting public is prohibited from taking photos or videos of the crypt, and so were we.

We learned from one of the center’s docents that the world-famous Madam Tussauds wax museum has been negotiating with the Marcos family to replicate the crypt for display at its London site. Madame Tussauds is a wax museum in London with branches in a number of major cities. It was founded by wax sculptor Marie Tussauds. It is a major tourist attraction in London, displaying waxworks of historical and royal figures, film stars, sports stars and infamous murderers.

Marcos’ widow, Imelda, has reportedly refused to grant permission to Madam Tussauds to, in her words, “waxate” the crypt until after the Aquino government has allowed her husband’s burial in the Libingan Ng Mga Bayani (National Heroes’ Cemetery).

Mrs. Marcos also reportedly wants Madam Tussauds to donate an undisclosed percentage of the daily proceeds from the London museum — effective when the wax Marcos crypt is installed — to the poor people of the Philippines.

Already, Bureau of Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim Henares has her eyes set on the potential donation from the Madam Tussauds. Always vigilant, this taxwoman!

(ADOBO TOUR PART 3) CONFIRMED: VIGAN LONGGANIZA IS NOT VEGAN

imageVIGAN, Philippines  (The Adobo Chronicles) – Late last year, The Adobo Chronicles broke the story about a famous vegan DJ in California who sued a local food market for product mislabeling. She thought the Vigan longganisa (pork sausage) she bought was vegan.

After arriving in Vigan following a 6-hour drive from Baguio City, our Adobo Chronicles crew went right to work to investigate our earlier report about the longganisa.

We can now confirm with 100% certainty that Vigan longganisa indeed is not vegan. The famous Filipino sausage is packed with pork.

Our crew had it for breakfast this morning at the Cabugao Beach Resort, just a few miles north of Vigan City and we absolutely loved it. Of course, none of us was vegan.

So if you are vegan, avoid buying Vigan longganisa from your local supermarket. You have now been forewarned.
