U.S. TO IMPORT FACEKINIS FROM CHINA

imageWASHINGTON, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles® )  – It’s summertime and that means millions of Americans will be heading down to the beach to beat the warm temperatures. But this is also causing great alarm among U.S. health officials because of the fact that skin cancer, mostly from sun exposure, is the most common of all cancers. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of their lifetime.

But not to worry.  The U.S. has placed an order of 50 crates of ‘facekinis’ expected to arrive from China in time for peak summer season.  The government will distribute the crates equally among the 50 states.

Facekinis are face masks that have become popular among middle-aged women in China who enjoy going to the beach on a regular basis.  The mask covers the entire head and face except for small openings for the eyes, nose and mouth. It is considered more durable, economical and effective than sunscreens and other protective creams.

A word of caution, however: if wearing the facekini, make sure to still apply sunscreen around your eyes, and on your nose and lips, otherwise you will end up looking like Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer or having black eyes and lips like Edward Scissorhands.

Also, Americans are being warned about fake facekinis that are manufactured by fly-by-night entrepreneurs. In other words, Fakekinis.

U.S. EXPORTS CHICKEN TO CHINA THEN IMPORTS BACK FAKE CHICKEN

imageWASHINGTON, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles® ) – Fake noodles. Fake eggs. Fake beef.

Recent media reports show that some Chinese companies have been manufacturing fake food using both organic and inorganic ingredients. These fake food have yet to find their way to America (or have they, already?)

Well, fake chicken from China may soon hit the shelves and refrigerated sections of U.S. supermarkets, and the U.S. government may have had a hand in it.

In 2014, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)  gave four Chinese companies approval to export cooked poultry products to the United States. But it was largely a symbolic move.
That’s because the only chickens that China can legally export to the United States must first be imported from countries that have USDA approved poultry standards. America, Canada and Chile are the only countries that make the grade.

So some enterprising Chinese food manufacturers import USDA-approved chicken from the U.S., sell them locally at extremely profitable margins, then produce fake chicken to export back to the U.S.

Looks like China did put one over the United States.

For Filipinos in the U.S., their chicken adobo may never taste the same again…

WASHINGTON, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles®) – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has designated the Philippines for Temporary Protective Status (TPS) for a period of 12 months, effective July 1, 2015 until the new elected Philippine president takes office next year.

Under section 244(b)(1)(B) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), 8 U.S.C. 1254a(b)(1)(B), the Secretary of Homeland Security is authorized to designate a foreign state (or any part thereof) for TPS upon finding that the foreign state has experienced events or situations resulting in a substantial, but temporary, disruption of living conditions.

A similar status was just granted to Nepal which recently experienced a massive, devastating earthquake.

A TPS means that nationals from the desginated country who are in the U.S. illegally will be temporarily immune from deportation and are eligible to apply for work authorization or travel permit. While it does not automatically give them a permanent resident status, they are allowed to apply for a green card – if they qualify – once the period of TPS expires.

The TPS for the Philippines was based on extreme devastating living conditions in the country resulting from widespread political curruption and inefficiency of the Aquino administration. The Department of Homeland Security cited massive unemployment, high crime rate, lack of affordable housing, rising food prices, overcrowding in Metro Manila and other urban areas, and the nightmarish traffic conditions exacerbated by mismanagement of MRT, Metro Manila’s light railway system. This is not to mention that majority of politicians now in office are linked to  graft, corruption or plunder cases.

All these conditions are expected to significantly improve once Aquino steps down at the end of his presidential term in 2016.
