WASILLA, Alaska (The Adobo Chronicles® ) – Speaking to CNN on Sunday, former Alaska Governor and Vice Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin said that Spanish-speaking people who are in America must, “be legal, or they’re out of here,” and that while here, “they should speak American.”

Palin, who failed in her Spanish and French language classes in high school, was reacting to Donald Trump’s criticism of fellow Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush who is bilingual in English and Spanish.

The Adobo Chronicles®  caught up with Palin as she was preparing to go on a long Labor Day weekend vacation to Cancun, Mexico, and we asked her what  kind of “American” speech she was referring to.  Was it the southern accent, New York accent, Alaskan accent or Minnesota accent?

In response, Palin said, “Oh,  I betcha, that’s one of those  media  ‘gotcha questions’ that I’m not gonna answer.”

Did she just say Minnesota?

BIG CHANGES COMING TO MISS UNIVERSE PAGEANT NEXT YEAR

DORAL, Florida (The Adobo Chronicles) – While the world is anticipating the final results of the 2014 Miss Universe Pageant now being held in Doral, Florida, Donald Trump has announced major changes in the international competition starting next year.

The business mogul and Miss Universe Pageant owner spoke with reporters tonight while he was busy assisting the 10 finalists put on their evening gowns in the dressing rooms.

Specifically, he announced three major changes:

1. The Miss Universe organization will now actively recruit transgender contestants to this international competition which originally only allowed contestants who were born women.

2. Because of the perennial outstanding performance in the pageant of contestans from Latin America (including Venezuela, Argentina, Colombia and Brazil), the pageant will adopt a new official language which will be used throughout the competition, from the preliminaries to the finals.  That language, of course, is Spanish.  Non-Spanish speaking contestants will still be allowed to engage the services of a language interpreter.

3. Trump will have to personally approve the final decision of the pageant’s panel of judges to ensure that his favorite contestants win the crown.  After all, he’s paying for it.

The LGBT community and Spanish-speaking countries immediately praised Trump’s new policies.  The government of the Philippines, meanwhile, has mandated the teaching of Spanish in schools and universities — from kindergarten through college, especially among women and girls to increase the country’s chances of winning more Miss Universe crowns.

CALIFORNIA’S BILINGUAL PARROT SPEAKS TAGALOG, NOT SPANISH

parrotTorrance, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – A parrot that spoke with a British accent when he disappeared four years ago has been reunited with his owner, and he now speaks Spanish. Or so the owner first thought.

A veterinarian used a microchip to track Nigel, an African parrot, to his owner, Darren Chick, a Briton who lives in Torrance. Mr. Chick said Nigel’s accent is gone, and that the bird now chatters in Spanish. He said last week’s reunion had brought tears to his eyes, although Nigel bit him when he tried to pick him up.

Chick said all he heard from his red, white, blue and yellow-feathered pet this week was “cuchara,” “tenedor,” “cuchillo,” “mesa” and “silla” (Spanish words for spoon, fork, knife, table and chair).

Today, however  Nigel kept saying “salamat” (Tagalog for “thank you”). That’s when Chick realized he was actually speaking in Tagalog, the dominant language in the Philippines.

Though spelled differently, cuchara, tenedor, cuchillo, mesa and silla mean the same things as they do in Spanish.

Chick has appealed to the Filipino or Filipino family that adopted Nigel for the last four years to come forward so he could thank them for  making his parrot bilingual.

Incidentally, Nigel’s feathers are the same as the colors of the Philippine flag.
