CHA CHA MAKES A BIG COME BACK IN PHILIPPINES’ DANCE SCENE

cha-chaManila, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Not since the Macarena craze in 1996 has a dance form made a big splash in the Philippines. It’s a big come back never before seen on the dance floor.

Cha cha is, of course, a dance that first became popular in the 1950s. It is derived from two other dances, the Latin Mambo and the Swing. It is a favorite category in ballroom dancing as well as in the popular American reality television show, “Dancing With The Stars.”

In recent weeks, Filipinos — baby boomers and millennials alike — have been packing dance studios and night clubs to practice or showcase their ‘1-2-3-4 and 1’ steps, and DJs are dusting their old  vinyl records to replace their hip hop CDs.

Many believe that the big come back was prompted by recent clamor from supporters of President NoyNoy Aquino for him to run for a second term.  The constitution limits the presidential term to six years, without the possibility of re-election.  Aquino’s term ends in 2016.  His allies in Congress have suggested a constitutional convention to amend the fundamental law of the land and allow for a second term for the president.  In the Philippines, a constitutional convention is more popularly know as “Cha Cha.”

Aquino’s Interior Minister Mar Roxas is leading the clamor to convene a new Cha Cha to allow the President to stay in power.  Ironically, Roxas, in 2008, was a harsh critic of then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who wanted to convene a Cha Cha to allow her to run for another term.

In the beginning, Aquino had said that a Cha Cha just to extend his current term is out of the question, but he is now warming up to the idea as he faces the remaining year and a half of his residence at the presidential palace. “I’ve come to enjoy living here,” he told reporters. “I wouldn’t mind another six years or more.”

IN PHILIPPINE CITY, ORDINANCE PROMOTING SEXISM, AGEISM AND HOMOPHOBIA GOES INTO EFFECT

Mandaluyong City, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – In this Philippine city just a stone’s throw away from the capital, Manila, smart politicians have succeeded in passing a new ordinance that promotes sexism, ageism and homophobia — under the guise of curbing criminal activity.

Beginning this month, only first-degree relatives of motorcycle drivers will be allowed to ride with them. According to Mandaluyong City Mayor Benhur Alabos, officials based the ordinance on a law in Colombia, a country that also had rampant crimes committed by criminals riding motorcycles in tandem.

Based on the ordinance, only spouses, parents and siblings will be allowed to be with motorcycle drivers. Riders must bring their proof of relationship such as marriage certificates and identification cards. Violators who are caught during the six-month trial period will be apprehended.
Specifically, as clearly demonstrated in giant billboards (see photo) announcing the new ordinance:

– a man and a child (between 7 to 10 years old) as backrider CAN ride in tandem

– a man and a woman as backrider CAN ride in tandem

– a man and another man older than the specified age as backrider CANNOT ride in tandem, except if they are father-son

But ordinary Filipinos are smarter than the politicians.  Many  have eluded law enforcers by dressing up as women so that an adult man can ride in tandem with another man who is not his relative.  Others have put on mickey mouse and other children’s costumes to look like 10 year-old backriders.

Last week, The Adobo Chronicles reported that Philippine Senator Tito Sotto III has proposed a similar law that would apply to the entire country.

MOVE OVER HOT COP OF CASTRO, HERE COMES HOT COP OF MANILA

imageManila, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Forget the Hot Cop of Castro. There’s a new face (and body) that’s causing a lot of heads to turn. And yes, he’s a cop – real cop.

Police Officer 2 (PO2) Mariano Flormata, Jr., a.k.a. Neil Perez, is one of the contestants in a male beauty pageant, Misters of the Philippines 2014. The pageant will be held in Manila this September.

Flormata is no newbie to the runway. His most recent assignment is with the Aviation Security Group at Ninoy Aquino International Airport’s Terminal 3. Get it? Runway?

He is trained in bomb disposal and aircraft hijacking, so don’t try any tricks on him.

We’ll stop right here and let his pictures do the talking. Oh, and yes, he does have a Facebook page. Not quite 50,000 “likes’ that the Hot Cop of Castro has.  But it’s just a matter of time!
