INDIA BANS SLAUGHTER OF COWS; PHILIPPINES CONSIDERS A BAN ON PIGS

IMG_6760MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Philippines Senator Nancy Binay is proposing a bill that would copy a newly-approved law in India which bans the slaughter of cows and the sale and consumption of beef in the western state of Maharashtra.

Hindus, who comprise 80% of India’s 1.2 Billion population, revere cows and the sale and consumption of beef is banned or restricted in many states. The state of  Maharashtra includes India’s commercial capital and biggest city, Mumbai.

Binay wants a similar law to apply to pigs in the Philippines.

The daughter of the Vice President says her bill will prevent future pork barrel scams which have plagued the country in the last two years. The scams siphoned  some Ten Billion pesos of taxpayer money into fake projects and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) for the personal gain of some business people and politicians.

Several senators and high-ranking government officials are now in jail facing charges of corruption in connection with the pork barrel scandal.

“Kung bawal na ang kumatay ng baboy, eh di wala nang pork barrel,” Binay said. (If the slaughter of pigs is banned, then there will be no more pork barrel)

HUGE ERROR IN FORBES’ LIST OF FILIPINO BILLIONAIRES

imageNEW YORK , New York (The Adobo Chronicles) – Forbes magazine has apologized for messing up with the  2015 list of Filipino billionaires.

Of the 11 Filipinos listed on its 2015 richest men and women in the world, Forbes said only 3 were actually Filipinos. The rest were Chinese.

“We will immediately make the correction and revise our list,” an editor of Forbes said.

Forbes also clarified that its list does not include Filipino politicians who have acquired assets from the pork barrel scam since these have yet to be assessed and resolved by the courts.

PHILIPPINES FILM BEST ACTRESS AWARD PITS NORA AUNOR VS. NORA AUNOR, AND IT’S A TIE!

Aunor and Aunor
Aunor and Aunor

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Philippines actress Nora Aunor — the same Nora Aunor who was snubbed by President NoyNoy Aquino in last year’s naming of the country’s National Artists – keeps on reaping film awards. She is unstoppable.

This time, Ms. Aunor beat herself in the Best Actress category of the annual Gawad Pasado film awards.  PASADO (Pampelikulang Samahan ng mga Dalubguro) is an organization of private and public school master teachers, elementary through college, reviewing films as documents and materials for teaching different disciplines.

Actually, Ms. Aunor tied with herself in this year’s Best Actress award.  She was nominated for two of her films, Hustisya,  and Dementia.

It is not uncommon for film awards bodies to declare a tie among contenders in acting or film.  However, with Ms. Aunor winning in both her films, PASADO did not have to go through the trouble of ordering a second award trophy. That saved the teachers some money, especially considering that teachers are among the lowest paid professionals in the Philippines.

All’s well that ends well!
