BATAC, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Asserting that answering the call of nature is a basic human right, former Philippine First Lady and incumbent Congresswoman Imelda Romualdez Marcos (Second District, Ilocos Norte) has filed an unprecedented bill before congress that would make it illegal to charge fees for the use of public toilets.

Charging a fee for the use of public toilets is a widespread practice in the Philippines — in bus stations, public parks and plazas, strip malls and even in some airports and restaurants.

In fact, in a public toilet just blocks away from the Ferdinand E. Marcos Museum — where the former president’s embalmed body lies in a refrigerated glass crypt — a reporter for The Adobo Chronicles had to pay five pesos ($0.11) to use the bathroom while doing a story in Batac, Ilocos Norte, hometown of Marcos.

imageThe bill, if enacted, will apply to all public toilets throughout the country. Violation of the law carries with it a fine of One Hundred Thousand pesos and/or jail time of 6 months to one year.

Senator Nancy Binay, daughter of Vice President Jejomar Binay, has expressed full support for the bill and promised to campaign for its approval when it reaches the Philippine Senate.

Notwithstanding the political rivalry between the Marcoses and the Aquinos, President NoyNoy Aquino said that he will sign Marcos’ bill when it reaches his desk.

IMELDA MARCOS: FROM FIRST LADY TO PILGRIM

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – How times have changed. Imelda Romualdez Marcos, former First Lady and once considered the most powerful and influential woman in the Philippines, has turned pilgrim. Thanks to Pope Francis’ visit to the Philippines and to Marcos’ home province of Leyte.

At last week’s mass celebrated by Pope Francis in Tacloban, Leyte, Marcos was present, not as former First Lady or Congresswoman or Beauty Queen, but as a pilgrim, just like the thousands of people who attended the papal event on a rainy and windy day.

Miracles do happen. Marcos was even seen wearing a yellow raincoat, a color closely associated with Cory Aquino (and the current president Noynoy) and the opposition that led to ouster of her husband Ferdinand and the family’s exile to Hawaii.

Imelda’s ID tag  says it all: “Pilgrim.”

San Francisco, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – Rewind to 1966. As part of their world tour, the Beatles held concerts in Manila, playing in sold-out performances before thousands and thousands of screaming and crying Filipino fans, many sporting their idols’ mop head hairstyle.

Immediately thereafter, the screams of adoration turned into screams of ‘Go home, Beatles.’ The reason? The Liverpool boys reportedly stood up the Philippine First Lady and her three children, failing to show up for a scheduled visit at the presidential palace.

Imelda Marcos was beloved in her country and the snub was considered an insult not only to the First Family but to the entire country.

There has never been a resolution to this international controversy.

Well, maybe, it’s forthcoming.

On August 14, Paul McCartney will hold a concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. Billed ‘Farewell To Candlestick,’ it will be the last concert to be held in this former San Francisco 49er stadium before it is demolished.  The 49ers have a new home stadium in Santa Clara.

The Adobo Chronicles learned that McCartney has invited the other surviving Beatle, Ringo Starr for a much talked-about reunion.

There’s more. Imelda Marcos has also been invited to grace the occasion which many are calling a ‘kiss and make up’ event. Marcos will reportedly sing a duet with McCartney – ‘Dahil Sa Iyo,’ (Because of You), an extremely popular Tagalog song and a favorite of Marcos.

All’s well that ends well.
