HUNDREDS FINED IN CALIFORNIA FOR ACCEPTING THE ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE

imageSacramento, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – Hundreds of Californians who accepted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge have found themselves in hot water.

The Ice Bucket Challenge is the fundraising campaign that has gone viral, raising more than $3 Million for the ALS Association.  ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a paralyzing and sometimes fatal condition that involves a degeneration of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

The challenge involves people dousing themselves with a bucket of ice and posting a video on social media. They then challenge two other people to do the same within 24 hours, or make a donation to the ALS Association.

Hundreds of Californians have taken up the Ice Bucket Challenge, but they have also been slapped with a $500 fine.

Because of the drought and worsening water shortage crisis, California water regulators have recently approved an ordinance imposing the fine on residents who waste water – from washing their cars and hosing down sidewalks to watering their lawns.

In the last two weeks, close to 800 Californians were cited and fined for dousing themselves with buckets of ice in their front yard, a clear violation of the new ordinance. Most of the citations were served in person, for those who were caught in the act of dousing.  However, a few violators received citations in the mail after they posted their videos on social media.

SOUTH KOREA’S BUTTY CONTEST (PARENTAL GUIDANCE ADVISED)

Seoul, South Korea (The Adobo Chronicles) –  The Philippines might be the beauty contest capital of the world, but South Korea has emerged as the butty contest capital of the world. Now, that wasn’t a typo. It really is ‘butty.’

Just recently, the Miss South Korea beauty pageant was criticized for its line-up of contestants who, by face standards, seemed to all look alike, thanks to the country’s propensity for plastic surgery, especially by the women.

In an effort to move away from its reputation as the plastic surgery capital of the world — per capita basis — South Korea has come up with a different kind of beauty contest that does not involve facial looks. Instead, the emphasis is on the posterior.

Aptly titled, “Sexy Back Contest ” the women are judged based on the beauty of their behinds. The contestants are made to wear masks to ensure that they are judged not on the basis of their looks.

The first-ever butty contest was held in Seoul, featuring guest performer Justin Timberlake who sang his hit song “SexyBack” during the final segment of the pageant.

Franchise holders of various Philippine beauty pageants have reportedly scheduled an emergency meeting this weekend to strategize on how to unseat South Korea  from the new world title.

Let’s hope the Filipinos will not resort to anything frontal.

HOT WATER BUCKET CHALLENGE LAUNCHED TO RAISE MONEY FOR SELFITIS CURE

Martha Stewart, left, and Mark Zuckerberg accept the ice bucket challenge

San Jose, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – By now, most people with Internet access are familiar with the ice bucket challenge intended to raise funds to help find a cure for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease.”  ALS is  a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS often leads to paralysis.

The challenge involves people either dousing themselves with a bucket of ice and posting a video on social media, or making a  donation to the ALS cause.  Unfortunately, many people, including celebrities like Mark Zuckerberg and Martha Stewart chose to douse themselves with ice instead of making a donation.  While the challenge campaign has gone viral, donations were not at levels the campaign organizers had hoped for. In California, Governor Jerry Brown reminded people to consider the state’s water shortage before accepting the ice bucket challenge.  “They should just donate,” he said.

Now, a similar campaign has been launched on the Internet to help raise funds to find a cure for selfitis. (Recently, the American Psychiatric Association officially declared the taking of selfie photos and posting them on the Internet a mental disorder).  Instead of a bucket of ice, the selfitis challenge involves people dousing themselves with hot water, or making a donation.  Most people are choosing to donate.

While no official numbers have been released by either the ALS or the Selfitis groups, there is great speculation that more funds have been raised by the hot water bucket challenge.

Moral of the story: pick your challenge wisely.
