MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – It’s not only the daily wage drivers and passengers that are inconvenienced by the jeepney strike. There’s also the barkers.
Barkers are those who scream routes and beckon passengers with hand gestures giving direction which jeepney to go to.They’re everywhere : outside schools, hospitals, offices and public markets; terminals and anywhere jeepneys stop to pick up passengers.
Their only asset is their voice but they are voiceless amid the strike. They earn about five pesos for every jeepney they fill — around one hundred fifty pesos per day.
They are among the most thankful when jeepney strikes end.
MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – In a Democracy like the Philippines’, everyone has the right to peaceful assembly or to publicly air a grievance — strikes included.
This week, some jeepney operators and drivers are staging a nationwide strike to protest the government’s public utility vehicle modernization program.
From all indications, the strike has been relatively unsuccessful especially in Metro Manila because not all transport groups participated, the vehicle coding program was suspended, and workplaces and schools allowed their employees students to work or study from home.
Nevertheless, many commuters who were pissed at the decision to strike are organizing a week-long boycott of all jeepneys that participated in the nationwide transport halt. The boycott starts March 13 and ends March 19.
Do not do unto others what you don’t want others to do unto you!
MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles,Manila Bureau) – The threat of a nationwide jeepney strike starting March 6 may have been averted, thanks to a new proposal by the Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (PISTON).
While the Land Transportation Franchise and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has extended the deadline to upgrade and modernize jeepney units in the countryto the year’sk end, PISTON continues to oppose what they have called a very expensive program.
Instead, PISTON unveiled its counter proposal to the modernized jeepney which it said will not only be more affordable to jeepney owners and operators but will also help ease the nightmarish traffic in Metro Manila and elsewhere.
The Adobo Chronicles secured a preview prototype of the PISTON proposal.
