A PRESIDENT OBAMA BEACH IN HAWAII?

imageHonolulu, Hawaii (The Adobo Chronicles) – Hawaii may not get a Presidential Library, but it may get a Presidential Beach, if Honolulu City Council member Stanley Chang gets his way.

Chang and fellow council member Ernie Martin are hoping to rename Sandy Beach Park to President Barack Obama Sandy Beach Park. It comes after a video was taken of the President bodysurfing back in August 2008.

Known for its powerful waves and white sandy beaches, Sandy Beach Park is one of the most scenic spots on Oahu.

“We’ve already included funding in the past year’s budget for a plaque commemorating his love for bodysurfing there, and we hope to generate additional interest in the park. We hope to have it as an additional showcase for residents and visitors from all over the world,” said Chang.

But not everyone is convinced.

“I think you should just leave it as Sandy Beach”, said one beachgoer.

“I don’t think it’s fair because, personally, he’s done nothing for our beach over here,” Waimanalo resident Kanaloa Kane said. “Maybe he did grow up here, but as a local, I’ve been surfing here for 10 years easy and I don’t think it’s fair.”

Is renaming a beach good enough for the President of the United States? Obama doesn’t think so. “Oracle’s Larry Ellison and Facebook’s Mark Mark Zuckerberg get to name entire islands like Lana’i and Moloka’i  after them,” said Obama, “so I’d rather rename  the entire island of my birth place Oahu to Obama Island.”

Chang was disappointed at Obama’s comment, but he seems to be warming up to the idea of renaming the entire Oahu to Obama Island.

FOR THE PEOPLE OF KANSAS, THE PHILIPPINES IS THEIR FAVORITE INTERNATIONAL DESTINATION

imageKansas City, Kansas (The Adobo Chronicles) – For people who live in Kansas, their favorite top travel destination is … drum roll … the Philippines.

This was revealed in a new research study conducted by Hopper.com. The study surveyed all 50 U.S. states to determine their population’s top travel destination. The results showed that the Philippines was also the top choice for California and Nevada. But Kansas?

So, The Adobo Chronicles conducted an independent follow-up survey to try to determine why Kansans chose the Philippines as their top international travel destination. Our survey was very revealing, and unanimous!

imageWhen Kansans think of the Philippines, they almost always think of ‘The Wizard Of Oz,’ the timeless classic that began in Kansas and ended up in lala land. In the ‘Oz,’ the main character, Dorothy, was transported by a tornado into the make- believe world of munchkins, the wicked witch, the heartless tin man, the brainless scarecrow and the cowardly lion.

Respondents to our survey indicated that their view of the Philippines includes the little people (Munchkins) – the Filipino masses who are forever poor and powerless because of the manipulation by the rich and corrupt politicians.

When Kansans think of the wicked witch, they think of Kim Henares, the Internal Revenue Commissioner who is constantly engaged in a witch hunt to collect taxes and more taxes while knowing that it all goes into the pockets of politicians.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is looked upon as the heartless tin man — from the bribe-collecting traffic policemen to PNP chief Alan Purisima who has enriched himself by receiving expensive gifts and building a mansion-like home in the province of Nueva Ecija which he describes as just “ordinary.”

The brainless scarecrow is, of course, President NoyNoy Aquino, forever clueless and always blaming someone else for the problems of his country. He loves using empty rhetoric and scare tactics when confronting his critics and enemies.

The cowardly lion is Vice President Jejomar Binay who is not man enough to face the Senate inquiry into his and his family’s shady practices, especially with regards to the now infamous and overpriced Makati City Hall parking structure.

Then, there’s Dorothy’s ruby slippers which remind Kansans of Imelda Marcos’ collection of 3,000 pairs of shoes (In fairness, nine of Imelda’s shoes were made of ruby).

In conclusion, our survey confirmed that Kansans were right on in choosing the Philippines as their top destination. After all, in the Philippines, life imitates fiction; a life of make-believe.

WAIKIKI’S ABC STORES TO BE RENAMED XYZ STORES

imageHonolulu, Hawaii (The Adobo Chronicles) – For cities in the U.S. mainland, there is a Starbucks coffee shop in every street corner. In Waikiki, there is an ABC Store not just  in every street corner but two or three within the same block. These 7-Eleven type retail shops are among the most recognizable tourist traps in Waikiki.

That is about to change. Beginning on January 1, 2015, all ABC Stores marquee signs are coming down and will be replaced with “XYZ Stores,” thanks to the brilliant marketing strategy of the developers of the upcoming and upscale International Market Place on Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki.

The developers are responsible for the demise of the old and historical International Market Place, nestled in the middle of Waikiki that featured cottage-type stalls under banyan trees, selling wares from Aloha shirts and kukui nut leis to fresh-cultured pearls and ukeleles. The demolished site is now being reconstructed and  a new, multi-level shopping complex will rise featuring high-end retail establishments like Saks Fifth Avenue.

As part of the overall marketing strategy for the new complex, the developers have proposed to change the name of all ABC Stores to XYZ Stores in order to attract more shoppers belonging to the X & Y (Millennial) generations. “The baby boomers are getting older and the future of retail shopping is now in the hands of the younger generation,” the developers said.

Only the store signage will change. XYZ Stores will still sell souvenirs, t-shirts, chocolates, coffee, sunscreens, flipflops, beachwear as well as food & beverage.

The cost of replacing the store signage from ABC to XYZ will be borne by the International Market Place developers. A true investment for the future.
