Philippines’ Department Of Tourism Unveils New Promo Slogan, A Double Entendre

IMG_7221.PNGMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Advertising company McCann Worldgroup Philippines will be in charge of crafting the new tourism campaign of the country, the Department of Tourism (DOT) said over the weekend.

Tourism undersecretary for advocacy and public affairs Katherine de Castro said the P650-million contract with McCann, which won the bid to be the advertising and promotions partner of the DOT for one year, includes the production and positioning of marketing materials, as well as the formulation of a new tourism slogan.

The Adobo Chronicles spoke with a McCann spokesperson who informed us that the slogan selected for the 2017 tourism year is a take-off from the previous “It’s More Fun in the Philippines.”

The new slogan is “More Fun in P.I.”

P.I. of course stands for Philippine Islands (although the country is now known by the acronym of ‘PH.’)

But it also stands for ‘P*tang Ina’ (Son of a Whore),  the cuss words often heard from President Rodrigo Roa Duterte in his speeches and interviews.

“President Duterte’s rhetoric and cussing have put the Philippines on the world map and we would like to capitalize on that,” the McCann spokesperson said.

He added: “Why reinvent the wheel when we can just tweak it to reflect the current situation in the Philippines?”

Petition For Miss Universe To Pull Out From The Philippines Fails; Next Target: Miss Earth

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles. Manila Bureau) – Several weeks ago, a group of Filipinos and others here and abroad signed a letter petition asking the owners of Miss Universe to pull the 2016 beauty pageant from being held in the Philippines.

The petition states:  ‘This reason is the objectionable, scandalous, and demeaning sexist attitude demonstrated by the newly elected leaders of our country, by no less than President Rodrigo Duterte, and his cohorts towards womankind.’

As expected the letter, signed by about 200 individuals, didn’t have much support from beauty pageant-loving Filipinos.

Well, the petition has officially failed. No less than reigning Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach of the Philippines has confirmed that indeed, the international pageant will be held in Manila on January 30, 2017 (January 29, US time). Pre-pageant events are also reportedly being planned in cities like Baguio, Bohol, Cebu and Davao.

Disappointed but determined, the group of petitioners is reportedly setting its sight on the next target : Miss Earth, another major international beauty pageant based in the Philippines.

This time, the group’s reason has nothing to do with President Duterte but with this year’s Philippine representative, Imelda Schweighart,  who embarrassed the country by asking Miss Austria if Adolf Hitler was from her country;  accused the pageant winner Miss Ecuador of having fake nose, chin and breasts;  and made a huge deal about the yellow gown that she was supposed to wear had she been chosen a semi-finalist (she wasn’t.)

It seems that this group of petitioners has too much time on their hands.

Filipinos Love Their Beauty Queens, But This One?

img_6759MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Strike one: she asked fellow contestant Miss Austria if Adolf Hitler was from her country. Strike two: she said of Miss Ecuador: her nose, chin and breasts were all fake.

“She” is Miss Philippines Earth Imelda Bautista Schweighart who was the country’s representative to the recently concluded 2016 Miss Earth Beauty Pageant held in Manila.

Schweighart who didn’t make it to the pageant’s semi-finals was heard and seen on video tape asking Miss Austria the dreaded question, and telling fans about Miss Ecuador’s “fakery.”

Miss Ecuador, Katherine Espin, won the title.

Filipinos love their beauty queens, but when a beauty queen embarrasses them, that’s a different story.

Schweighart has since tendered her resignation as Miss Philipines-Earth.

We hope this unfortunate incident will be buried beneath the earth.
