MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Ang isda ay hahuhuli sa sariling bibig (The fish is caught by its own mouth).
This is exactly what happened to activist nun and former president of St. Scholastica’s College Sister Mary John Mananzan.
In an interview on GMA News, she criticized the Duterte government for trying to silence the opposition by citing the cases of Chief Justice Lourdes Sereno, Senator Leila De Lima and Rappler CEO Maria Ressa.
“Tignan mo ang nangyayari sa opposition, si Sereno, si Leila De Lima, at Rappler … basta nag-object ka, nagprotest ka, naganyan ka … anong klaseng democracy ‘yan, hindi ba democracy means you have to have opposition? Kung hindi ka ganyan, hindi ka democracy.”
While De Lima was pleased at Mananzan’s comment, Sereno and Ressa both condemned the nun.
”As Chief Justice, I am supposed to be non-partisan,” Sereno said.
”As a journalist and news media executive, I am neither anti nor pro-opposition,” Ressa said.
Both then asked Mananzan to just STFU (shut up).
MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – It is the ‘B’ word most businesses dread the most: bankruptcy. And Rappler and its parent company Rappler Holdings, are not immune from it.
MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – The extra-judicial killings (EJKs) in the Philippines could even be worse than the 7,000 to 15,000 deaths some claim to be the result of President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs.
