Philippines Now Has Fastest Internet In All Of Asia

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – After many years of lagging behind its Asian counterparts, the Philippines has finally earned the reputation of having the fastest Internet.

This is good news for local and international businesses, as well as the millions of Filipinos who depend on Internet connection for their daily personal communications, news and entertainment.

The Philippines has gained two top Internet records: the fastest to drop and the fastest to eat up your pre-paid data.

Change has indeed come.

Philippine Media Outlets Apologize To President Duterte For Misquoting Him

image.jpegMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – The damage has been done. It has culminated in U.S. President Barack Obama canceling his meeting with Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte at the ASEAN Summit in Laos.  All because local media outlets misquoted Duterte.  And the foreign media picked it up.

At issue was the response by Duterte to a reporter question during which the Philippine president supposedly called Obama “son of a bitch” or “son of a whore.”

But thanks to the magic of video recording and Internet sharing, the world now knows that Duterte was indeed misquoted.

Independent reviews of the tape confirmed that the curse was not directly intended at Obama.  Some expert language analysis of the tape point to Duterte hurling the expletive at reporters and columnists.

Today, the Coalition of News Media Outlets of the Philippines (CNMOP) issued a formal joint apology to Duterte for their malicious misquoting of the president.  “Our members in the news media simply wanted to improve their ratings and declining popularity,” a CNMOP spokesperson said. “We promise to do a better job next time.”

Meanwhile, several U.S. other foreign news organizations announced they were hiring Tagalog-speaking newsroom staff so that they could be more accurate in their reporting of news about Duterte.

All’s well that ends well.

CNN News Anchor Wants Her Senator Sister To Resign

Pia, left, and Risa: the Hontiveros sisters

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – We’ve heard many sister stories before — stories of human interest, of success, of conflict. But nothing of the magnitude of a sister relationship gone sour over career.  And it could only happen in the Philippines.

Enter Pia Hontiveros. A familiar face and voice on CNN Philippines. She has established herself as a no-nonsense news anchor with many labeling her as the Anderson Cooper of the Philippines.

Then comes Risa Hontiveros, former Congresswoman and newly-elected senator.  A former journalist herself, Risa brands herself as a social activist trying to make a name for herself as a fearless politician out to challenge the status quo, and the Duterte administration.

In recent weeks, Risa has championed the “Never Again” movement, personally distributing anti-Marcos books ( well, one book that is — the one authored by Raissa Robles) in schools.   In response to the Davao City bombing, Risa has criticized President Duterte’s declaration of a “state of lawlessness,” saying that the military and police cannot run the country.

Now, how is Pia supposed to objectively report on the news when the main character is her sister?  She is conflicted.  She know about ‘conflict of interest,’ and she understands about credibility.

So today, she made a very difficult decision to publicly call upon her senator sister to resign so that she can freely report on the news.

But Risa has her own idea: “Why doesn’t Pia resign as CNN anchor,” she asked.

Well, if both of them resigned, their story would make for a great Oscar-winning movie. Perhaps the first ever Oscar Best Picture for the Philippines!
