MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Basketball Australia has issued a statement regarding the brawl which ensued in the qualifying game between its players and the Gilas Pilipinas team:
“Basketball Australia deeply regrets the incident in tonight’s match between the Boomers and the Philippines in Manila. We are extremely disappointed with what happened and our role in it,” Basketball Australia chief executive Anthony Moore said.
“This is not the spirit in which sport should be played and certainly not in the spirit in which we aim to play basketball.
“We apologise to our fans and will await the penalties to be handed down.”
“In hindsight, our players shouldn’t have worn their yellow jersey. We didn’t realize that the Dilawan (Yellows) are very much hated by the Filipinos.”
MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Libel suits seem to be in fashion these days. There’s Senator Antonio Trillanes suing R.J. Nieto, a.k.a. Thinking Pinoy. Then there’s The Adobo Chronicles suing Rappler and Maria Ressa. Now even the Catholic Chrurch is joining in the fray.
Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, the highest church official in the Philippines is suing Juana Change for comparing him to President Rodrigo Duterte.
“I am a man of God,” Tagle said. “Duterte is, well, a man. There’s a big difference there.”
Tagle added: “Duterte and I are both sinners, but the President is more sinful. He has even cursed our god!”
MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Reacting to a recent public advisory from the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT), Opposition Senators Bam Aquino and Risa Hontiveros jointly filed a bill that would impose stiffer penalties for illegal fishing in the country and in South China Sea territories claimed by the Philippines.
”We thank PLDT for reminding us and the Filipino public to continue fighting against this illegal acivity,” the Senators said.
But it was all a case of “lost in translation.”
PLDT’s advisory had to do with ‘phishing’ not ‘fishing.’ (Phishing is a cyber crime where potential targets are contacted by scammers via email, text or phone to ‘fish out’ sensitive data to be used in identity theft and other crimes.)
But rather than suffer embarrassment, Aquino and Hontiveros said they will still pursue their proposal to give more teeth to the country’s anti-illegal fishing law.
