MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – There’s been so much back and forth regarding the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) decision to revoke the media business license of Rappler due to the latter’s violation of the Constitutional provision on foreign ownership.
We caught up with Rappler CEO Maria Ressa at the U.S. Embassy in Manila where she was trying to renew her expired visa. Here’s the full transcript of our interview:
AC: Your reaction to the SEC decision?
Ressa: Suppression of Press Freedom.
AC: SEC says that Rappler violated the Constitution.
Ressa: Curtailment of Press Freedom.
AC: Do you now deny that Omidyar Network has an investment in Rappler?
Ressa: There is no Press Freedom in the Philippines.
AC: Asec Mocha Uson has invited you to apply for accredition as a blogger and be part of the Malacañang Press Corps. Will you accept?
Ressa: I’m a journalist. Press Freedom is under attack!
AC: What are your immediate plans now that Rappler’s license has been revoked:
Ressa: To keep on saying ‘There is No Press Freedom in the Philippines.’
